cricket or delica?

Hi all, this is my first post on this forum, though I have lurked for quite some time. I only have one good knife, a Spyderco SS Police that was given to me by my friend (a bit worse for the wear). This knife is a bit too huge and intimidating for an EDC, so I'm thinking of purchasing either the Spyderco Cricket or Delica to carry regularly. I'm leaning towards the cricket, 'cause it's such a cool little piece, but I'm not sure. Any help/ideas/stories related to which might be better?

I'll cast my vote for the Delica. The Cricket is a cool little knife, but probably too small for anything but the lightest of cutting jobs, IMO. The Delica is large enough to tackle most jobs, but much smaller than the Police. My Delica was my first clip knife and is still in daily use.

But like most of us - you'll probably end up buying both sooner or later. Knives are like potato chips ..............

interfectus,
Welcome to Bladeforums!!!
I have had both Spyderco's. I still have 2 Delica's, but my Cricket I sold to buy a Meerkat. I agree with phone_archer about the Delica. It's a good knife and a good size. Where do you work?? The Cricket might be better in an office. You could always post your question on the Spyderco forum here or on Spyderco's own forum( www.spyderco.com ).

Blades

I say go with the Cricket of you will reserve it for light duty. AS long as you don't try to pry a car door off of its hinges (i.e. you'll use it to open mail cut string, open boxes, etc.) the Cricket will be fine. They look neat, and you'll enjoy using something you enjoy looking at.

Welcome to the forums.

Thanks for the response, though I welcome even more of your feedback. More information is always better. I'm leaning towards the cricket, because it seems like a good knife to have as an EDC if you're looking to avoid trouble. I'm only a teenager, and still in school, so I won't be bringing it to "work", but i still like knives and find them useful. I'll eventually buy them both, of course (KNIFE FEVER!!!!), but I'm on a limited budget, so all of your replies have been well-informed and quite helpful. Keep 'em coming...

edited for some spelling and grammar errors

The Delica is an excellent utility blade. I foresee buying several more versions of it in the future. As for the Cricket, I haven't owned or handled one YET. BTW...Welcome! You've picked an excellent forum.

the cricket is too small for my likings.

I have carried the delica every day for 1 year. never let me down.
and I only had to sharpen it twice.

good luck

chris

Get a Spyderco Calypso Jr. in FRN. Its a bit smaller then the Delica, but built better and has VG-10 steal, way better then the current ATS-55 found on the Delica and Cricket. Also, I have never owned a knife that fit my hand in so many positions like my Calypso Jr. Spyderco is going to stop making them soon, so get one now. www.knifecenter.com www.1stopknifeshop.com Both should have them.

i'd like the delica, but if you are looking for a small blade i handled a Meerkat today and it was as we say in new england "whicked cool"

If your going to use it quite a bit, I would stay away from the Cricket. It's not the blade size that's a problem, it's the handle size. The handle just won't give you any leverage.

Thanks everyone, I took a look at the plain edge Calypso Jr., and I think I'll get that one. I can buy it for around $45 including shipping from knifesite.com. Has anyone had problems with them, 'cause it seems to good (cheap :)) to be true. Boy is that a sick (as we in Boston, New England say) knife, though :). I guess the Cricket and Endura will have to wait until I get more money....

There is nothing wrong with the Calypso Jr. It is cheap because Spyderco loves it customers and sells the best knives under $100. If anything ever happenes to it though, talk to Sal (the pres. of Spyderco), and he will hook you up with a repair or a whole new knife. By the way, the Calypso Jr. was the sharpest knife I own out of the box. That includes my $325 Sebenza.:) Got to love VG-10.
