Criminal abuse of a Russlock

Hell, that is criminal abuse of ANY knife.

I figure this would be a great first project for me to attempt at refurbishing a knife. I'll sand the pits out of the bolsters and replace the scales with real stag bone. I need to figure out how to tighten up the slack between the tang and the liner lock.

The help I need is the progression of the grit for the bolsters and the pins holding it together. Do I press them out and reuse, or grind them off and replace. I figure the middle pin has to be replaced as the pin is peened on both sides.

Here you can see the gap between the tang and the liner lock.

Any help would be appreciated. :)

The gap between the tang and the liner lock is not uncommon. The Russlock is not intended as a true liner lock, as much as an additional safety. It has both the back spring AND the liner lock. Sort of a more...old fashioned take on a typical liner lock.

Its not abuse if you dont permanently mess it up in some fashion.

That one looks to me more like well loved.

Those pits are going to be a bitch to sand out, and you will likely change the shape of the bolsters in the process.

Id leave that one alone.... but all the power to you if you don't.

i'd just lightly clean her up, sharpen it and carry it! I actually bought my son one of these last year, really neat knife and once you get used to the mechanism its actually not difficult to open. but really yours looks loved
i wouldnt do much more than Clean it-Oil it and Carry it:thumbup:
anything drastic is up to you though it's your knife, do what ya want

Concur. The original Cattaraugus leaf lock of 1906 was the same, as is the later Camillus liner lock and the liner lock Schrade used in the 125OT. It's nice if they sit flush, but it's not intended to do so.
