Criminal Justice student seeking CCW

Okay, so I know that this is WAY OFF TOPIC, but I am wanting to get my CCW here in California. I live in a pretty easy county (Butte) and have good cause. I am a criminal justice student and hopefully in about a year, I will be a LEO. My concern is that if I get my CCW the hiring agency will see the situation as I am just another nut that wants that job to carry a gun. what are your thoughts?

Again, pardon me going off topic, but the BK&T forums is the most active forum next to the exchange...

Oh and to make this quasi knife related, I just put my new BK-9 (first becker) through its paces! LOVE IT!

Yup, this definitely needs becker content..................

A little CWP/Becker mix for you?

No, really. I EDC the Becker, but not the XDm. I actually EDC a XD SubCompact. This is just for this thread to be a lil' more Beckerhead.

I thought the same way as you. I was worried that in my line of job, that they would think of me as just some gun nut if I had my CWP. I was wrong. They actually look up on that sort of thing. I don't know about your state, because I am not a fan of the laws of California, but I was worried the same way as you. A CWP/CCW is supposed to be a -good- thing to have, and it's horrible that we have to worry that some employer may think of us as a "nut" because of it. I say at least we took the time and money to get some proper training and experience with firearms, instead of being a thug and just tucking it in our pants. That should say something good about us(those who choose to get a CWP/CCW). I think it would be a good thing, buddy. Go for it.

Nope, not blued. Sanded a bit with some 120 grit and then dunked in warm vinegar three or four times for 15ish minute soaks. Between soaks I sprayed it down with windex and rubbed it with some 0000 steel wool and then rinsed in hot water. When it was how I wanted it I finished by dunking it in water and baking soda to neutralize and wiped it dry.

To the OP, I still have to get me a 9 one of these days. As far as the ccw permit goes, I'd just get it. They should be able to tell what type of person you are and realize that you have a ccw permit to protect yourself.

Looks really nice!

someone with a ccw is probably safer in my book than someone without one, as they've had to pass a background check, effectively been given approval by their local chief (in my area), AND if they also have a gun? that's more checks they had to pass to be legal beagles. that's a lot more lawfulness that people need to get a driver's license ;)

You would not want to work for an agency that finds CCW holders to be unqualified for employment. So this is an opportunity for you to weed them out - not the other way around. Exercise your right to own and carry a firearm - in accordance with the statutory law - and don't be a scaredy cat. :)

I thought that too. I waited until i had almost 2-3 yrs in before i applied. It still took me 1.5 yrs to get my ccw permit (one of my 4 references apparently held a grudge for a long, long time, so i had to get another). No easy task. We could NOT use a police officer, peace officer, officer of the court or a relative at the time i got mine in 1992. Hard to do when thats all the people you know. Anyways, our employer sucks & could care less. They even came out with a memo stating "our dept does not require, nor desire, you to act in/as a police/peace officer fashion when off duty". If we do, we are NOT indemnified from legal, civil or criminal prosecution. Yup, we are just a number to them & they want us to retire, so they can replace us with new people making less money, with less benefits. But thats just me. I hope your dept treats you better. Good luck in your career & train hard & stay safe.

Becker content: I CANT WAIT UNTIL THE NEW STUFF IS AVAILABLE. LOOKING FORWARD TO MY NEW BECKERS !!!

Twin,

if i am reading you correctly, you got a ccw permit after a couple years as a LEO? may i ask why? ALL qualified law enforcement officers and qualified retired leo's are permitted to carry regardless of state or local laws anywhere in the US. enacted in 2004 them made better in 2010 federal law. Just wondering my brother in blue. also, sounds like a very liberal, tought dept to work for.

I am a Peace Officer. I am not a Police Officer. ie: A NY State Corrections Officer. As such, even though we have the same certification, at least in this state, we get treated as the redheaded stepchild. The public hates us because the Governor tells them that State Workers are the reason our state is going broke, even though he has given himself & his cabinet payraises even though they make in the 6 figure salery range. We are some of the ONLY state workers that have a self funded pension. Yet they have the public believing that they pay for our pension. Anyway, they even told us that NYS does NOT recognize HR218. I have no idea how this is possible. I thought Federal Law trumped State Law. I believe soon, they will have 2 classes of Corrections Officers: those with Peace Officer status & those without, and of course along with that, will come a drastic reduction in pay. I am glad i only have a few years left. Soon, it will become a minimum wage job. Yet they want you to put your life on the line everyday. We may not carry a gun inside the prisons, but we still have to deal with HIV, TB, blood, feces, urine, throwers & a multitude of weapons & other things. We get trained every year in a multitude of things, including weapons qualification. Anyways we can NOT carry just anywhere in our state on a CCW. It has to be registered on our badge. I refuse to do that for a few reasons. 1) if we just get ACCUSED of certain crimes, you automatically lose your weapons & have to report it at work, blah, blah, blah & disciplinary action can be taken. 2) If we get ACCUSED of certain crimes at work, we get locked out without pay & also lose your peace officer status during that time & the police/sherrifs/troopers will show up at your house & remove all your guns. Mind you, i said JUST ACCUSED. I did NOT say found guilty. In NYState, it says right on my permit: This permit can be revoked for any reason. & usually is. We have had 3 people i work with, go through a brutal divorce, wife falsely accused them of threats (because lawyers said if there were threats or abuse, it would benefit them in court) & they lost all thier guns, were never compensated for them, lost thier premit. Wife admitted making this stuff up & said she was sorry. No charges filed on them. They had to get a lawyer & fight if they wanted thier guns & permit back. Who has the money to do that? We will be moving out of this state when we retire. Everyone i work with says the same thing. Tennessee is looking better everyday.

Doesn"t this sound like a wonderfull place to work for ? The courts make the rules for our prisons now it seems, & yes, they are liberal.

I frequent a gun forum where there's always a lot of talk about NY carry laws. It's bad throughout the state, but it's downright crazy in NYC. Without even having to search, I could link to three or four first-hand accounts of an out-of-stater traveling through NYC with their guns properly stowed and ammo separated, and they get delayed with car trouble, or even miss a connection flight at Kennedy or LaGuardia and have to get a hotel for the night, and end up with felony charges for having an unlicensed gun in City Limits. TSA rules and federal laws concerning legally transporting firearms are not recognized in NYC, and CWP reciprocity is non-existent throughout the state. Though I am relaying this second-hand, much of it comes from a pro-2nd Amendment lawyer whose practice is largely patronized by clients who get caught up in NYC's, and to a somewhat lesser degree, NY State's draconian gun control laws.

It's been a long time since I was there, but I was raised in CA, and unless things have changed a lot since I left, it's not much better. The only advice I can give to the OP is do one of two things if you're determined to go into law enforcement; 1) Move to another state. Otherwise, you will spend much of your career enforcing laws that you know in your heart and soul should be ruled unconstitutional, whether or not this country ever seats a Supreme Court that actually upholds the full breadth and depth of the Framer's intent for the 2nd Amendment.

And 2), if 1) can't be accomplished, stay out of law enforcement, lest you spend every working day dishonoring the oath to the Constitution that you will take.

That may sound harsh, but a citizen with a conscience and a reverence for the Constitution provides more service to this country than an LEO who doesn't take their oath seriously and solemnly.

And for Becker content, consider that a Remora is the only BK&T knife that the supposedly "free" men and women of California are allowed to carry in the brand-name line. I believe the blade-length limit is 3". I could be recalling that incorrectly, but my memory is that knife laws there are just as, if not more, ridiculous than gun laws.

Get out while you can. Quick, before they put razor wire all around the state borders to keep y'all from fleeing the wrecked economy and tyranny. And whether you stay or go, don't be an enforcer for tyrants anywhere!

Geez Twin, that's rough. I had no idea it was like that. Hope you can get out in time before it gets any uglier.

I don't understand where NY gets the balls to "not recognize" US federal law. I'm not usually a big fan of the federal government, but I really wish they'd drop the hammer on NYC, Chicago, and any other state that pulls this kinda garbage.

I feel for the Beckerheads that live in these areas. Like Blues said, the Remora is the only thing they wouldn't try and villify a person for. Even then some places I don't think I'd want any fix blade on me.

Don't laugh. Our current Governor has already proposed a 10% tax on NY State retirees, if you move out of the state.

I do not live in NYC, i am at the opposite side of the state. I can NOT carry in NYC unless my gun is registered on my badge & i just won't do that. Back in 1988 when i started, a fellow worker got locked out for some BS & ended up selling his gun for $50, that he recenty bought for $600, because it was on his badge, confiscated by local LE & he had 30 days to sell it or he would not be compensated for it all. Yeah, i am disgruntled & disappointed in the way the state squanders money on welfare, etc, yet has NO PROBLEM taking it & benefits away from those that work. Sorry for the rant fellas.

I hate NYC. My wife loves it. She lives in the city with the kids, I stay upstate to keep my guns and permit. It was jumping through hoops to get it in the first place, not going to jump through key rings for the "privilege" of living under Mayor Mike's thumb.. Been trying to convince her for 5 years to move to NC.. As far as I know CA gun laws are just as bad as NY's if not worse. I say move.
