First and foremost, this thread doesn't have a specific purpose...I just wanted to post this vid. Full disclosure: it is bloody, and obviously the advice is off. The comments are an interesting read as well.

I'm not sure as I watch WAY TOO MUCH youtube and read WAY TOO MUCH bladeforums but... I think this has been discussed before. Virtuovice has lots of good videos and not everyone agrees. The last post had most people saying they are much better sharpeners or he was basically stupid. A few defended him.

I don't sharpen like that but if it gives him results then so what.

Spoiler Alter: The "wound" is tiny and the mess is mostly stone and water with a tiny bit of blood.

Pretty gross but no big deal. I'm guessing he posted the video for the shock value. I've done that on accident before on tiny blades when using coarse stones but I definitely am careful to avoid it. It doesn't really hurt when it happens but it stings afterwards for a while.

Yes, it's been posted before.

Being stubborn and bleeding all over the place because you can't move your fingers up a few mm might get you closer to becoming a true samurai but it does nothing for your sharpening.

Agreed 100% , and increases the risk of rust building up in.the stone. I havent watched that video in awhile but isint he using a 120 shapton? If so thats a highly porous stone and getting the blood out from inside the stone itself may never happen till it gets exposed...

I've accidentally cut my fingers on my 1k waterstone as my skin was unknowingly but slowly getting abraded. I'm sure virtuovice could of avoided being cut, but for the most part his content and videos are good. When I was learning freehand sharpening his videos were one of several sources that helped my improve my technique.

This guy is just stupid. Does he also grind his fingers off when he uses a bench grinder? No sympathy for stupid.

Virtuovice is my ONE subscription on Youtube, he is extremely knowledgeable and experienced, but even I would have admonished him to stop once he figured out he was bleeding, and put some bandaids on his fingertips. I can tell you, he know how to get a knife sharp!
