I need to find out if the finish of the blade under the knives with a smooth coat is different from that of the crinkle coated knives?

Ive heard before (could be wrong) that the crinkle coated knives have a rough finish (for the crinkle coating to stick better maybe?). Is this true? As well, are the smooth coated knives smooth underneath the coating?

I ask this because I would like to sand off the coating of one of my smooth coated Busses and put a brushed type finish on it. If the blade is very rough underneath I could be in for a lot more work then I anticipated

Jerry.. Anyone..? I do not want to start this project untill I find out.

I looked at my smooth coated Natural Outlaw under a magnifying light, and could see what looked like small pits under the coating. Could be my imagination, or as my wife says, my perfectionist attitude. ;)

Is there a easy way to remove the smooth coating? Ive been wondering about this, cause I was thinking about taking the smooth finish of my Battle Mistress.
Any suggestions?

You can use paint stripper I think. Apply, let sit, and then scrape off. Works pretty well apparently?

Word is that Klean Strip brand "strip X stripper" works great. Apply with an old toothbrush, let sit an hour and scrape off with a chisel. Repeat if need be. Apparently it doesn't hurt micarta or represineC either. OwenM gave me this info, and he has actually done it. I'm thinking of doing it to my BA3. Underneath the coat is rough though, so you need to spend some time smoothing it out with various grades of sandpaper if so desired.
Here is the link to the GM that OwenM stripped:

This sorta brings me to MY question. Does A2 have this 'pitting'? It looks more like peening to me. It's very apparent on the Aftershock where there is no finish and visable on (some) other smooth coated infi blades. But does A2 affect this same texture? I have a couple of blades where I can't tell from the grind lines (not quite as vertical as A2,not quite as curved as infi),but some are smooth and some are dimpled.

Mog..On the Aftershock, the blade is smooth and the tang dimpled. I like the effect. Actually I think it's from air bubbles in the raw steel. Or rather the way it cools. Am I making any sense????

That peened (spelling?) effect is the natural finish of INFI before it's ground. It ranges from light to strong for pattern intensity. This is one of my favorite finishes as well.

As to the question fo A2. None of the A2 blades I have owned ever showed a similar pattern. This isn't to say it wasn't there, simply because the maker could have ground all of the remain flat surfaces...hence removing the natural finish.

In continuation...I've never seen that style pattern on any steel besides INFI.

Thanks DN That helps a lot as it is all Busse blades I'm refering to. I knew that infi showed this effect, but wasn't sure of the other steels Jerry used. Some of the 'questionable' blades showed this, others didn't. This will help for my own clarification as all the blades are warranted in any event. Like I'm really gonna be able to break one.:D :D
