I had promised in a previous thread that I would post a review and pics of this knife after I purchased it at my local flea market. So here we go...

Before finding this little gem I had never handled a Cripple Creek before and I have to say that I am very impressed with the f&f. I would say the production quality of this barlow is comparable to a GEC Tidioute or better.

It's hard to tell from this pic but the sawbone scales are a very rich brown color, looks very classy to me. Another aspect of the design that I like a lot is the bolster stamp.

There's a couple of small pepper spots on the backside of the bolster and a small chip at the bottom of the scale which looks to have happened in production.

The blade is perfectly centered and no rubbing to speak of. Probably need to put a little flitz on the brass liners.

The match striker pull looks great but I'm not a big fan of blade etchings. This one has a half-stop which is a big plus. It snaps like an alligator while the pull is probably a 7, perfect setup in my opinion.

I'm usually not a huge fan of spearpoints but I think this one looks great being that you have a nice deep swedge to compliment the blade shape. I think the blade is carbon steel but the gentleman I bought it from said it might be D2.

Overall, a great little barlow and one heck of a flea market find!

Hi Nick!

Great looking traditional pattern. I like the look of the knife. The swedges on the blade make it really nice. :) Which material is the handle made of? Looks like Delrin to me.

Kind regards
Andi

Thanks for the compliments folks.

Hey Andi! That's a good question, they definitely look like bone to me... Maybe someone will chime in here shortly that knows a little more about this particular knife. I'd also like to find out what the blade steel is???

Hey there Nick.....

Very nice Barlow....these are most definitely sawcut bone..there was a total of three or four with different handle material done in this pattern by Queen Cutlery for the Cripple Creek owners at the time..which was 1990-1994(5) if I remember correctly and short lived....as for the steel used I always thought it was 420 or 440 variation used but it could of been D2.....but not 1095. During these years Queen was all about Stain free with a high polish

Hey Jim,

Thanks so much for all the info! Funny that it was made by Queen because it reminds me a lot of my Dan Burke barlow, though I'd say the f&f on my QDB is not as good as this particular barlow.

Definitely a Queen-made knife. Likely supervised by the same guy who runs/owns GEC as we speak.
Nice knife, but it has my initials on it (CC) so it must be mine! I'll PM my address:D!

Seriously, I suspect the chip in the bone happened after it was purchased. It is very rare that a knife would be sold as a "first" with a chip in it.

Cool spear blade shape.

I have been looking at a lot of barlows. If that is D2 then that would be just the barlow for me. I like everything about it.

Thanks for sharing.

Kevin

Thanks for all the positive feedback gentlemen!

Yeah, I kinda figured the chip happened after it was purchased but what the heck, it just gives it more character... Oh, and I'll make sure and PM you a tracking number first thing Monday morning, LOL! ;)

I have one just like it. The steel is 1095, mine has a good patina from a few apples.

Very nice, it looks like the bone on your scales is a little lighter than mine. Did your blade etching come off over time, or was there no etch to begin with?

-Nick

I like it, but what can I say I'm a sucker for anything Barlow/jack knife. Also I especially like the spear point and the subtle but distinctive swedge.

Mine had the etch, but between a little (unintentional) removal when I was convexing the edge and hiding under the patina, it is not very visible any more.

Mine has medium brown bone, not really dark.

Man, the color of the bone on those handles is awesome. I'd love to find one in stag too. Thanks for the pics.

Two lovely knives guys, cracker of a swedge going on there, and I really love Lambertianas light coloured bone....it has a nice glow to it.

Are the bolsters stainless or Nickel Silver?

Love the blade shape and swedge.

Being a former Cross Country runner, the >>>CC-> arrow reminds me of fun times from high school.:D
