One of the knives I took to Africa was my Cripple Creek knife. I thought this was a carbon knife but I was wrong. I handed it to my tracker to skin and quarter my Kudu and I did not develop a patina. So I assume this is GEC 440c steel?? or something else?? The tracker was all smiles while using this knife. It had his approval.

I believe the CCs were 420HC not 440C. I have one of the end capped jacks and it is 420HC. GEC's 440C knives have "Cyclops Steel Works" stamped on the back of one the blades.

I don't recall that being stamped on the blade

I know that I am probably wrong, but I thought some of the stag Cripple Creek blades were D-2?

i'd be curious to hear the outcome, and seeing as your tracker was happy with the knife, is it safe to assume it didnt need resharpening the whole time? if so, id lean towards D2; 420hc is great stuff but i know from experience you'd have to resharpen

Recent Cripple Creek knives that SMKW has made either came from Great Eastern or Queen Cutlery and as Trand has mentioned this model being the #73 Scout Pattern was built by GEC in 420HC with the exception the Cyclops Steel Works is only present on GEC labeled knives and not knives that have been built for a different brand........bucksforus you're correct D2 is found on the /Queen built knives for Cripple Creek which for those that are familiar with the patterns is very obvious ................

I'm not tracking, here.

Is that missing an "H", or is "2" supposed to be a "4"

Thanks Jim. I had assumed they also stamped it on 440C blades they made for others but I just checked the Schrade autos which I believe are 440C and they do not have any stamps on the back of the blade.

I was under the assumption that mine was 440C. Yes, I am aware of what assuming does. :D

Mink................

The Equal End #53/54 Pattern, #25 Jack and #73's all were built with 420HC....here's the description from the Blue Roof in the Mountains on your piece

·420 stainless steel blades
·Genuine stag handle
·Brass pins and liners
·Nickel silver shield and ringed bolsters
·3" spey blade length
·3" clip blade length
·4-1/4" closed
·Limited edition 1 of 200 pieces

Boggs is right, I watched the TV show when these knives debuted. 420HC for sure.

Like everything else they do, GEC did a fine HT on these. I'd be surprised if they are not 57-58 HRc just like their own 440C blades.
Very few have complained about Buck's 420HC, so we know it can be done right, and these are.
