Hello to everyone! I'd like to hear what everyone has to say about my freehand method. I first use a coarse stone and lightly work the edge of my knife alternating sides each stroke until I can feel a burr apex. Then I strop the burr off. Beings the only finer stone I have right now is a Arkansas stone I usually don't try to refine my edge any further I just try to maintain it. Will the Arkansas stone help any? My knives are a Kershaw leek, schrade uncle henry, and a couple that just say stainless.

If it works for you then it's good.

I personally almost never uae anything coarse, maybe 1000 grit to fix a chip. Mostly 8000 (smooth as glass stone)

I guess if you can fully apex the edge, no problem with your technique. Further refinement is possible, but for a working edge, that should do.

If you want to explore further, sandpaper and HeavyHanded washboard is recommended. Check HeavyHanded post (he has many in this subforum) and click at his signature link.

Your freehand sucks!

Critical enough?

Really, if a coarse stone is all you have, try and maintain on the strop. Save your steel as much as possible.
