not the best pictures but you get the idea. also, for those who have done this, how the hell do you get the mustard/vinegar smell off the blade:)

Hard to tell with those crappy pics. But if you like it and it doesn't rust easily you should be happy?

I would go over it with some mineral spirits and steel wool. It looks kind of orange red from the pics and that might be rust.

the patina is very solid. Just make sure your sheath isn't rubbing it off every time you pull it out and put it in ;) you can do more consistent jobs but it takes alot of time.

you can always start over if you don't like the way it turned out. I tend to leave the mustard on for hours, often overnight, then wash it. It does take some work to get the mustard off, and the smell. One relatively easy way to get the patina off if you are not satisfied with the result is with stropping compound. put it on a paper towel and rub away, being careful not to cut your fingers. It is like really really fine sand paper.

thats a really good idea, ill have to try that, im sure ill want to redo it at some point.

and yea i did this one real quick, i would only let the mustard sit for 40 minutes to an hour or so. i was bored and impatient

Yep, it's ugly. When I read the subject of this thread I thought it was going to be a porn photo....

ojo de pollo,

Just because you have an ugly knife doesn't mean you can't use it ;)

I leave the mustard on til it dries-about 15 minutes-and then peel it off and put new stuff on. My AG Russel still smells like mustard... It may not look pretty, but it's definitely a good use and abuse knife. It takes minutes of your time to put a new patina on, and I think it looks sexier than a knife with the factory coating that has been rubbed half off. I hear duracoat works well, actually, if you can go a month without using the knife. I know a few guys that have used it. Also Brownell's has an epoxy based gun finish that works well too.

If you were to wrap that with some desert tan or similar para cord, it would be kick azz!

I think it looks good. I'd hit that lighter side with another round of mustard, but that's just me...

looks good,

And for the smell... I usually wash them with nice soap but after that it still has a light smell to it..
Oh well you'll get use to it :D

the smell is actually almost completely faded, im surprised. if you put your nose up to it though you can def tell there was mustard slathered all over it though haha

It's called "seasoning". A seasoned knife is a good thing, just like seasoned cast iron.

I like the look of the factory coating, but I also like patina-ed blades.

Something I've been trying lately, is to get the blade as shiny as possible, then hand apply mustard, prop the knife up edge down to let it sit for 6-8 hours. When I scrape the mustard off, it's good and rusty underneath. I take some fine Scotch brite to get the rust off and soften the edges a bit. Then throw it in vinegar over night.

Then just lightly brush off any rust, and keep oiling it over the next few days.
