I just received my new to me Mnandi with its Damascus blade. In looking at the blade work it is a true wonder IMO.

This an excerpt from the thread here "Damascus Mnandi through the years" The billet is drawn out and folded until the desired number of layers are formed. In order to attain a Master Smith rating with the American Bladesmith Society that Moran founded, the smith must forge a damascus blade with a minimum of 300 layers. (Source Wikipedia)

So what that says above is that 300 layers to get the Bladesmith rating as a master smith as they must fold layers a minimum of 300 times.

In reference to a CRK blade, do you think CRK's Damascus blades are folded 300 times or was that just for a master smith ranking?
Its a pretty small blade . . . just curiuos.

Thx

Actually I just found this YouTube on making Damascus steel:

His part 2 shows how they get the ladder pattern.

To get 300 layers you don’t have to fold a damascus billet 300 times. Let’s say the billet started out with 20 layers. Fold that once and you have 40 layers.

Im partial to rain drop. This 8 min vid is cool the way they get the rain drop pattern. Also shows how much labor goes into making the blades and this justifys to me the higher price of a Damascus blade:

ya they were great! like the above poster said each time they fold the steel billet it doubles. so if he has 40 layers folded its now 80. so it does not take that long to reach 1000. he said the more you fold like towards 1000 the finer the pattern is which is not what most users want. at least for me i want a bolder looking pattern which is why i prefer rain drop. these damascus blades can run $100’s more for the price of the knife so i want the pattern to be noticed. the 3rd vid was how they do rain drop.
pretty cool
