How does the Damascus steel used by CRK compare to S30V in terms of toughness, taking and holding an edge and ease of sharpening? S30V is pretty good steel; besides looking better with all those neat designs, is the Damascus better steel?
I may be wrong, but I always looked at Damascus as a steel that's just as good and in some cases better than the better steels used today w/regard to taking and holding an edge, however, it has the added benefit of aesthetic beauty and uniqueness. So you get a knife that's just as good but with a unique appearance. As a collector, appearance & uniqueness is important to me, hence the draw to Damascus. Note, this is just one's guy's opinion and I've no data to back it up
CRK uses Damascus from a few different makers. As far as toughness goes any steel that is not a mixture will be tougher due to the grain structure, chemical comp, heat treat, etc. If you wanna check out what type of Damascus CRK uses click here.
Thanks, I went through the Devin Thomas site last night as well as the Crucible Steel website's data sheets looking for answers. Unfortunately, none do a direct head-to-head comparison of CM steels with Damascus.
Devin uses AEB - L and 304, so you'd need to find a steel
chart that has both of those, average their chracteristics, then compare that average to s30v.
That still doesn't deal with specifics of heat tretments but it might help.
AEB-L and 304 mix isn't the only one used, and a newer one he is using AEB-L and ATS-34, which should cut even better, and Chris Reeve bought a bunch while at the Eugene Oregon show.
