CRK Fixed Blade Handle Removal

I have a Green Beret 5.5 that I use, and it's gotten to the point where it really needs a good bath. With my "user" fixed blades, I usually remove the handle scales, then scrub the blade and scales with a toothbrush in hot soapy water.

I believe that CRK uses some kind of adhesive tape to secure the handles to the blade, and I think I can see something between the handle and blade, does this mean that I will not be able to (or should not) remove the handles for cleaning?

Edited : not going to justify removal of my removable hardware attached handles, just curious how difficult the 3m tape is to remove from the scales and the blade tang. Any help from those with experience in the matter would be appreciated :)

As I just had the scales of my Nyala being replaced by CF scales, I can describe only from there. Not sure whether it is the same with Green Beret.

The dealer for custom scales recommended to send the Nyala in for replacement of the scales. He said the scales are not only fixed by screws but additionally by some kind of glue (or adhesive tape, as you are saying). Therefore he offered to replace the scales at his shop. When receiving the knive back, the original scales where in the parcel and were very sticky from that glue. I was basically able to rub this of the scales just with my thumb. A bit of work, but it worked out :-) So I can tell only from the scales, not from the tang. I am not sure whether the custom scale dealer did care about a possible remaining adhesive tape at the tang or whether he just put the cf scales on it and that's it. If he cleaned the tang before attaching the cf scales, I dont know how he did it. But if you want me to ask him I will do so.

Best,
Stefan

Stefan,

The adhesive tape is proving very difficult to budge, it's definitely awesome stuff for keeping the handles in place.

Any details on how your craftstman got the handles off would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, for any help :)
