hi, i'm wanting a small fixed blade knife for general utility purposes, i.e. cutting up cardboard boxes etc., but a strong durable one also. i like the CRK MOUNTAINEER I with 4" blade. would a knife like this serve these uses?

I have one on the way ( somewhere in postal limbo ) and think it would make a great choice for the tasks you are considering.
The Shadow III and Aviator are similar in size but have a different blade grind. The Mountaineer grid is higher up the blade and this makes it a better slicer - think food prep. The Shadow blade may be a tad stronger in hard use but if you manage to break a CRK A2 blade you are doing something pretty rough and probably should have been using a pry bar.
The other difference is that the Shadow/Aviator have a double finger gaurd and the mountaineer series are singles. The single guard make it easier to 'choke up' on the blade for fine work.

Any of the 4" models would be a good choice so look at the sheath, since how you are going to carry it, is an important consideration as well.
