Thanks to an understanding Wife I was able to get some time in the Deer woods to do a little hunting, this was my 29th year hunting, it's my favorite passtime and I look forward to it all year.
This year I hunted with a friend on his land and in the State Forest that it is adjacent to, it was a great trip and a fun experience. The snow fell almost all day every day that I was there, it was beautiful. I've always enjoyed hunting in the snow and have never minded the cold, I don't know if its nature or nurture but I know that I received my love of the snowy cold deer woods from my Father- He would've loved the hunt this year, which makes it bitter sweet as we lost him to cancer just a few months ago at 66 years of age. I know that he was there with me in spirit and that if my children are interested in hunting when they're old enough I'll pass on to them what I learned from him; in this way he'll live forever, where he loved being the most- the deer woods.

One thing he would've really appreciated this year was the stellar performance of the Nyala when it was put into service to field dress a nice Spike that my friend shot on our last night hunting, this was my first unsuccessful season in over a decade-DOH!
I had my phone with me and was able to snap a few pics for all of you fellow CRK nuts, some are a little graphic, especially if you are squeamish, but if you eat meat and understand that this has to happen somewhere for you to eat then you shouldn't mind.

Heres a couple of the beautiful scenery I was fortunate enough to see.
Drive in.

Sunset

Snowflake that landed on my arm

Snowballs that accumulated in the Jack Pine needles

Now onto the deer and Nyala

The spike, he named it Larry

The knife after being used to field dress Larry

Gutted Larry with the Nyala and an RMJ Jenny Wren( after we took Larry outback to the wood pile )

Another image of the Nyala after it'd performed like a butchers blade, it split the rib cage like a light saber

It was a great hunt this year and I'm hoping that my last morning hunting this season, tomorrow, will be more successful. Either way, it doesn't matter as long as I'm out there doing it.

Thank you all for taking the time to read my post, HAPPY THANKSGIVING.

PS, Blackend- put your vacation time in for next year, we'll stay in Mi. And can hunt in Capac, at Makowski's, or at your place. Anywhere you wanna go Brother, Makowski is in.

Thank you very much Dan.

I've used a lot of different blades to field dress deer over the years but none of them worked as well or had the feel of the Nyala. I'd say the closest runners up have been the ESEE RC3 & 4. Even as good as they are the ergo's of the Nyala and the belly of the blade just beat them HANDS DOWN.

have a great THANKSGIVING.

Great to hear about the Nyala for field dressing. I have one on order with the insingo blade shape .

Have a good thanksgiving as well!

I've been waiting for the Insingo version to come out, can't wait to get my hands on one. I've been carrying a Large Insingo as my main edc for a while, had it in my pocket for the hunt and it served its purpose well.
Since we had 5 days of constant snow and high winds everything seemed to freeze up, including the rubber seal on my tonneau cover. I found out the hard way that it had froze up when I was out in the forest trying to pack up camp, I tried to lower the gate and it wouldn't budge, thanks to the smooth curve of the spine of the Insingo ( way better than the standard blade in my opinion ) I had something that I could break the ice loose with without wrecking the seal.
Of course, I took a few pics of the beauty queen that saved the day.

Here she is

That looks like a cracking spot and great pics, too. It's good to see another RMJ user, I have a few of their hawks and they areally are great. They pair up with a CRK very nicely.

Great pics. Since I am so into CRK, I pretty much use ONLY them, in any task I perform. When hunting, I have tried different knives over the years. For a couple years, I used the Sable IV. I then switched to the Ubejane and have been carrying it ever since. This year I am thinking on trying one of my sebenzas for the task. I have yet to purchase a Nyala, but will do so sooner or later so I can try it out. It looks to be an excellent design and would serve quite well in the field. I am always on the looking for others that the Nyala always seems to slip by the wayside.

Thank you very much Haze.
It was my second trip to that forest to hunt, first was a month ago for archery season ( my first in 20 years for archery ), it is a beautiful area and the deer hunting doesn't seem to be too bad even though this was the first year in a very long time that I was unsuccessful in my hunt.
RMJ hawks don't get mentioned too much around here which surprises me with how very good a product they make, seems like the CRK guys would be more into them.
I have a Shrike that I bought off of the exchange, it is so impressive that I decided to get another hawk from them. I went with the lighter, smaller, more easily carried but still very capable Jenny Wren and I couldn't be happier! It helped to make quick work of the gutting, cut shooting lanes, cut down a few 2-4 inch pines, helped with dinner, and I even shattered some glass with it. I ended up carrying it everywhere due to how easy it was to carry and how useful it was to have around- if you haven't tried out the Jenny Wren yet I highly recommend that you do.

Struck out on a farmland hunt again this morning after 4 1/2 hours of sitting in 9 degrees Fahrenheit all I saw was 6 rabbits and 12 gauge slugs don't make for a very edible rabbit.

There's always late season archery though ;)

I can't believe I missed your post, sorry for the late reply.

I've been very curious about the Ubejane but I've never seen one in real life and was too late to hear about them to get one at a decent price. With its sweeping blade I'd bet that it's great at its intended purpose.

My buddy Blackend has a mint Sable IV that he got from Fooj, what a sweet knife. I hope to talk him out of it one day.

I've used a Shadow III and an Aviator to dress deer before but they just didn't wow me, almost seemed clumsy in use for that task. The Nyala outperforms them both hands down, it'll be my go to hunting, camping, backpacking knife for the foreseeable future- I couldn't be happier with it.

I'll eventually use a Sebenza to dress one, just to do it, but the circumstances will have to be right. I'll need to be someplace where I can later take it apart and clean it well, would feel naked without it in my pocket and I'm definitely not putting a gut covered blade back in my drawers ;P

Thanks for the write up. I am always trying different knives for deer processing. I do really like my esee 4, very nice for the job. The Nyala really catches my eye and if I can find one with carbon fiber handles... That might just do it for me. As for deer season. Yeah I got skunked. I have a cabin in Mio and we saw deer tracks but no deer this year. Oh well it was still a fun hunt.

The ESEE 3 & 4 that I have both performed great for dressing deer, I REALLY like those knives! They were my favorite field blades before the Nyala, it'll be my go to for a very long time with an ESEE in the pack as a back up.

Always nice to talk to another Michigan deer hunter, sorry to hear that you too got skunked. I only know 2 guys that bagged deer this year, was a tough year to get one as most hunters I know never even saw one.
I've never hunted in Mio but I've heard good things, I hope that you have better luck next season.
Oh, as far as I know there's only one Nyala with carbon fiber handles, it was made by a fellow forum member and looks really nice. If you search the threads you may be able to find who bought it and try to pry it loose ;)

Thanks for taking the time to read my post.

Congrats on the hunt! Looks like the Nyala did you a great job!! Love the looks of that blade alot

Ummm venison tenderloins..

Now your talking !

Sometimes at band camp, I mean deer camp, we just chop them out and cook em up before they even get a chance to cool down. They always taste good when chopped into thin slices and fried in a cast iron skillet over an open fire with a little bit of seasoning. Since it's the right time of year a little bit of pumpkin ale or a Guinness always round out the meal nicely.
Now I need to go to the freezer so I can thaw some backstraps for tomorrow.

That's what we usually do at deer camp to. Cut the loins out and fry em up. So good. And yes that is the one Nyala in carbon fiber that I saw that made me want one!

Hey bro is that the Insingo you got from me?? If so I'm glad to see its getting put to good use!! I agree with you about the Nyala. It's been my go to hunting knife for about 3 years now. I sharpen it once a season and it last thru all the bone chopping and hide skinning I can put it thru!! Last time I was in from offshore I killed two nice deer on the weekend and cleaning them was effortless with the Nyala. I've also got a Ubejane and the ergo's on that knife are awesome as well but it's in pristine condition and just can't quite bring myself to use it.

Thank you very much!

If you've been on the fence about getting one I'd highly recommend that you take the plunge, it truly is a great design.

How've you been Brohammie ?

Well I hope.

Yes that is the Large Insingo that I traded you the small Reg Crosshairs for, been my main edc since I got it- great knife, told you that I'd use it didn't I ;P

I wish that I would've given the Nyala a try sooner, I couldn't be happier with that knife. I'm glad to hear that yours is working out well for you and that you had a successful season last time you were in.
Keep in touch.

Oh man working my butt off as usual!! I just couldn't get used to the blade style on the Insingo, but after seeing it in use I may pick up one in the future to see how it will work out. On my Nyala I had a Mr Don Seals from here on the forum do some file work on the spine, he calls it thorny vine, and he polished the blade for me. Man you talk about bring the true beauty of the knife out like nothing else!! I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow to show you.
