CRK One-piece for Alaska

Hey everyone,

I have a question about which CRK One-piece to get my father for a outside EDC. As he's out adventuring He's already carrying a .44 (got too because of the Bear). So it dosn't need to be a monster.

Here's some Background:
My Dad moved to Fairbanks AK this last spring, moving up there has been a big adventure for he and my Mom, both sixty and having a blast up there (I so wish I could be with them). Now that he's settled in, he's been net fishing for Salmon, out for halibut, and lots of fishing on the rivers. As it get to moose season I'm sure he's going to go. He still needs to get in better shape if he's going to go for sheep. Besides, who know's what other kinds of trouble he'll get into :)

I'd like to get him one of the CRK One-piece knives. Here's my reasoning, I want him to have a way to carry a firemaker and a sugar source (he's diabetic) everytime he goes outdoors.

I'm thinking a Sable IV, Shadow IV, Skinner, Mountaineers or Project I. Problem is I'm not sure what's the best length for him. I'm thinking the Sable IV is a good choice of size and utility of blade shape.

What do you all think? Sable IV or something else?

Sable 4 is a winner, probably my favourite of all the CRK fixed blades (including the GB and NR) and I have handled everything they make.

I like the mark VI. 5.5 inch blade is well suited for most chores, but not too big or too small...Jim

One of the 5.5" blades would make a good all rounder and wouldn't be overly heavy.

If he could carry only one knife, I'd choose the Skinner. When I go hunting here in Alaska I take three knives, a Mark Terrell WSK, Talon and a Gerber guthook. Before I got the Terrell's I carried a Becker Brute and Necker in addition to the Gerber. If he goes after Moose, someone will have to bring a bonesaw or better yet, a small chainsaw. Basically you need something that can chop, skin and do small chores like cutting rope, etc... Your father will get more use out of the Skinner than any of the other knives. Getting him a Roselli axe, Gransfors Bruk hunting axe, or any small axe would be nice too, they come in real handy when you have to cut green wood if no deadwood is around.

I have the Shadow IV. I think that size would be fine for his intended purpose.

I guess for an all 'rounder I'd go with the Ubejane myself. Decent for skinning and nicely sized for general purpose.

I do think it would be a little big and clumsy for the skinning part, but we all make compromises. My favorite skinners up here are a Spydie Moran or my beloved BRKT Highland Special.

If you're concerned about the fire and treatment always being at hand though, I'd look right towards one of the smaller Shadows or Mountaineers. Much more compact and easy to live with, and I've seen alot of moose, bear, and caribou cleaned with a 4'' or less blade up here.

sorry for the lack of a decisive answer...just pondering...:o

Thanks everyone, I'm still undecided. The Sable IV, Ubejane, and Shandow IV seem to be where I'm leaning. Run's got a good point with going smaller. "Easy to live with" is a good way of putting it. So a 5.5" blade is the longest I'm thinking.

I'm not too worried about butchering, when any of our friends gets something most everyone comes out to help and brings thier tools. If I were to look of a skinner, the Spydie Moran or a Dozier would be my choices. The BRKT's are really nice too, but one knife at a time.

Thanks Briggz...
