Hey,
I got myself a Pacific as a Christmas present to myself, but it's a little chilly up here in BC to spend much time in the woods with it yet. After looking around, I can't find any pictures or reviews of people actually using their CRK's out in the wild. Are most people buying these as collectors, or do they actually get used around the campsite and In the bush? Should I have gone with something a little less pretty in a carbon steel if I actually want to make it a camp knife?

Thanks,
Jesse

CRK get used, but most of the fancy ones with mammoth bark and uniques are more safe queenish, if thats a word ;) . I have used several of my One Piece Knives in the field. I have definitely used my CRK folders in the field. Just tonight, I was trying to dig a root out of the ground with my tanto umnumzaan for a root cane, but the root was a bit too thick, so I am going to have to go back with a small axe or a saw.

I also have a Pacific and a 5.5" Green Beret I got this past fall. I was looking at them yesterday and was trying to decide which one I was going to use, but could not decide on which. I think the Pacific feels better in hand than the Green Beret, but it may just be my hand. I love the design throughout, though I could definitely do without the serrations. I really wish CRK would do a run of them without serrations for more use in the field. Serrations are not going to help me whittling and making walking sticks. But hey, they are there and I have to live with them.

Dont regret your purchase, it was a great one. When I take mine out, I will be sure to take some pics of it in use.

I have and have used the Pacific but I have to be honest and say that is was rather quickly put aside in favour of the Mtnr 2 I usually use. The Pacific is a great design IMO but could really do with out those bloody serrations. I also didn't much like the thumb ramp, but the Pacific is not a designated bushcrafter or like knife and is intended to see a wide range of tasks. The serrations and thumb ramp do have a reason for being there given it's a "combat knife". The blade shape and size are good, as is the handle, the use of micarta for the handle is another thing I like and the coating lasted pretty well too. The sheath is another plus IMO and I actually have a few of those same spc-ops sheaths for other knives that I use.
The knife being in S30V was something I wasn't sure about and while stainless would most certainly not be my first choice the knife performed quite well in my experience. It was found lacking when it came to fine work like carving or making feather sticks etc. as one had to use the part of the blade after the serations and so it felt like there was a definite loss of control. That was obviously down to design rather than materials though. All in all I like it and think it's a useable knife but there are a couple of buts for me personally, I'm sure you will enjoy using yours when you get the chance. :)

The craftsmanship of the knife is flawless. I couldn't say anything better about CRK when it comes to making a knife, but after reading 12,000 knife threads, I don't think it will see much use. I will keep it as a toy to play with and pick myself up something a little more rugged and less pretty(sounds like I am describing myself)!

Don't worry about using your knife. It's not a toy. I have a cousin that has been using a CRK Green Beret for years on camping and survival trips. Never had any problems or complaints about the knife. Just don't beat on it with a sledge hammer and you should be fine.

But, doesn't everyone take a 5lb sledge with them backpacking to use as a baton? How else can you split wood?

I appreciate what those tests were attempting to do, but it is pretty stupid to test something in a matter that doesn't have any real world situations. I will likely buy myself another knife besides my Pacific and then I will use both of them!

I have been contemplating about an CRK larger fixed blade long time. They are surely great knives, I like their shapes. But I wish they would produce smooth edge versions. I can imagine that serration is not very practical in cutting wood, e. g.

The Pacific will be my first CRK fixed blade. I've already bought a Gfeller Casemakers leather sheath in preparation for the actual knife:)

Out of all of the non-one piece CR knives I own, I like the N.R. Warrior best. As some of the others have stated, I don't care for the serrations on the Paciifc or the Green Beret. The Warrior does not have serrations.

+1 Warrior is a nice knife.

Ive had mine for a while, although I have no doubt it will work well are a woods knife, I never use mine for that, it is my Go-Bag knife for when I need a sharp fighting knife. I have ESEE's and Busses for camping and chopping..

I don't find the serrations on the Green Beret to be an issue. Only an inch of serrations, on a 7" blade. However, I also bought a Warrior because of it was a plain edge. Like them both....

I had the NR Warrior, but I am just not really into recurve blades. I did clear saplings from my hunting spot with it and it worked great. I have since sold the NR away. I now have the 5.5" Green Beret and the Pacific. I think the Pacific would be the better field knife as it has more cutting edge than the 5.5 GB. I agree in that I wish they made plain versions for those that want to carry into the field. Its the least they could do since the One Piece Knives are gone. Plus its less work for them having not to grind the serrations into the blade edge.

I have a Gfeller Leather sheath for the 5.5 GB and its of amazing Gfeller Quality as one could expect. Should I decide to keep and use the Pacific, I may buy a leather sheath for it as well.

I am always buying and selling CRK, so once I decide which one I wanna keep and use, the other will probably be gone. I do like them both though...;)
