As a proud new owner of a ShadowIII I am wondering how best to protect that nice pancake sheath. Have done a search but found nothing definitive. Because the sheath is done in that waterbased epoxy are the usual oils etc. not recommended?
In the habit of using neatsfoot on most everything. Any other owners or someone at CRK, your replies appreciated.
Oh yeah, why an aluminum buttcap? A search on that said maybe so small compasses can be fixed in cap. Is that true or for ease of mfg/cost/?
thanks

Okay I'll bite :D

I have had my Shadow III for about a year now (EDC). Besides getting comments like, "what the hell is that" from co-workers (sheeple) my sheath doesn’t need any extra attention. Aluminum butt cap? Because what would be the point of a butt cap in A2 tool steel, aluminum=less weight. What would be cool is an aluminum extension to screw on the end.

BTW, A kydex sheath would be a very practical solution, if you can find one.

kydex is rough on finishes, lest we forget...

Thx for replies. Had the Shadow only for a month or so, really like the sheath's quality, and how it rides high and snug. It's my edc as much as socially possible. I have some Kydex from OnScene for other knives and it's great, but have an sentimental? attachment to good leather work. No bad wear yet on sheath, wanted to start off right so it will last.
A few use marks on sheath and knife so am in that awkward stage, between nib and a nice patina..sigh
Once had machinists papers, and like you immediately tried to think of stuff to do with knife's hollow, tapped handle..
1..a staff like ones Crawford knives used to make that would accept crk on the end..or..
2...aftermarket end that could be fitted to wood, graphite? whatever of your choice with choice of thread protecting screw on tubes. the tubes could be rubber tipped, or incorporate a hiking spike, or ice spike.. remove the tube and you could mount knife on end of staff..
ok, pretty esoteric, just saw the movie HERO with neat pike fight so I'm off in lala land.
As for steel vs aluminum just like steel better as it wears, but maybe finish on crk will be more durable than I usually see on aluminum.
have a good one
