Someone and I were having this discussion today, and I thought I'd bring it over here. I'm currently looking for a CRK Star-Tac...I like it better than the regular Umnumzaan, and it has a second kind of coolness to me. I already have a couple Sebenzas, but my buddy who has a couple CRK's as well, is getting into Hinderer. I'm not too well versed in Hinderer although I know what the differences are, but if you could get an XM-18 at factory pricing NOT secondary pricing or a CRK Star-Tac at standard price, which would you get and why? And assume you already have a couple CRK's.

If you're not that interested in Hinderer yourself then I'd say get the Star-Tac. Maybe one day when your curiosity & interest peaks you can try one but if you're not there yet then I'd hold off.

I have personally owned a sebenza and played with a few other crks and ended up selling my crk because it just couldn't kick the hinderer xm 18 out of my pocket. In fact the hinderer is the only thing that I carry anymore as far as folders go.

I would choose neither. I'd probably get the Wilson Combat Eagle. The main reason being is that I recently acquired a VECP and it fricken rocks. Really like my CRK 21 lg and XM-24 but the George is as good if not better then both of these. Plus I like flippers:p

Put the two side by side and the Hinderer is bulkier and wider. Keep in mind Hinderer knives are made for fire fighters, rescue people and folks in those fields. They are exceptional knives for their attended use. They are built to last and be reliable. But, the quality of CRK is unsurpassed, the established reliability of CRK is proven. With the zaan, it can be used in extreme conditions or for a gentleman's knife. IMO it is best all around knife made without a specific purpose. I'm thinking the 25 will fall in the same category with enough given time. I've got 4 Hinderer's and 2 zaans and I'll pick the zaan over the Hinderer. But, that's just me

Unless it was a slicer grind I would pick CRK over Hinderer any day of the week. The Hinderer's famous Spanto grind is just too thick to be useful at anything but prying... IMO

If you actually want to have precise cutting then stick with CRK. Hinderers are built more like pry bars with an edge. For normal edc, spanto is a little excessive because of the weight and the bulky grind. it's a very beautiful grind, but it's also very thick so it's not going to break on you.

What if it's a slicer grind rather than spanto?

I'd probably get the Wilson Combat Eagle.

Funny you say this But I have this sitting in my shopping cart as we speak. Still contemplating on weather or not to pull the trigger?!

Back on topic, I have Both a start-tac and XM-18! I Think you would like the Star-Tac a bit better. Pretty much for all the reasons Ajack60 stated.

Xm18 at factory pricing all day.

I have both an Xm and an Umnum in my rotation... both great knives.

The CRK's are better for everyday use. The hinderer's are just awesome blades, but mine didn't see much use and is currently for sale. If you're looking at a pure edc I'd go with the star-tac.

I agree right down the line, except that I sold both of my XM-18's and my CRK 25 as they seemed too unwieldy (large, bulky) compared to my other wonderful large Sebs. I carry a Zaan every day.

I must say I love the Hinderer XM-18. I love the blade design, and it carries well. Somehow, despite its slightly larger size, you forget you're carrying it. But both knives are amazing. The build quality on both is outstanding and you can't go wrong with either.
