I picked this one up a while back with the thinking that it should be a good first serious hunting knife for a young friend, my first hunting knives were stag handled. This one is the CRKT Brow Tine designed by a man named Russ Kommer.

The specs on it are (as taken from the CRKT website)

Dimensions
Open Overall Length 7.25 inches
Weight 4 ounces

Blade
Length 3 inches
Thickness 0.14 inches
Material 9Cr18MoV
Blade-HRC 58-60
Finish Mirror Polished
Grind High Hollow
Style Classic Drop Point
Edge Plain

Handle
Material Red Stag w/Mosaic Pins

Carry
Carry System Leather Sheath
Weight 1.3 ounces

I was looking at it on their website a while back and I liked the looks of it, then I noticed a couple of features not usually incorporated into production knives. It has a tapered tang and mosaic pins which are a nice touch, and with it being stag, even being a production knife, it is still going to have its own unique feel from others in the line.

The brushed finish on the bolsters is a nice touch.

It is a good size for processing wild game and feels pretty good in the hand in multiple holds that may be used in processing meat.

It definitely came with a good edge.

It has a mirror polished finish which not only means less resistance when slicing, but will also make a decent improvised signal mirror :)

I put it to work in the kitchen making up the fixin’s; potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, shallots, and some elephant garlic, for a pot roast and it handled that chore very well. I even tested it against some thinner slicing in the process and it passed with flying colors.

I was really pleased with the results, I think it should handle its intended purpose very well.

The way you're testing that knife, you might wanna get one for yourself Brother...;)JK

Fine looking tool for a young hunter, that's for sure !! I'm sure they'll enjoy and treasure it !!

Very nice looking knife. It should be a treasured gift.

It is nice, and has some really nice touches for a production knife. It handles well, even with the tapered tang it is still a bit handle heavy which is good for what the knife is meant for. I think he'll like it a lot.

Well, you know me...I had to take it for a test drive :) , at least I was able to resist beating on it, since it wasn't really designed for that. I have beat on enough CRKTs to have enough faith in it. He's been eyeballing a couple of my customs. I don't think he's quite ready for that just yet, but I still wanted him to have something that was nice.

I have been really impressed with CRK&T knives. Some are turned off by where they are made, but you get some serious bang for the buck. All the ones I own or have handled have been well made and razor sharp out of the box

Good looking little blade. May pick one up for my brother. He needs a good knife for hunting, he is always asking to use mine when we go together.

Yep, I have had the same experiences with them. They've all been solidly made and seriously sharp from day one.

It seems like a really good little knife, I really do like how it handles. Yeah, I know that feeling. I tend to keep a couple of loaners in the truck now, because I am abnormally touchy about handing anyone the knife I have on my side.

You're not alone on the loaning out of blades Brother Mistwalker !! I'm VERY particular about who I lend a blade to.. My best friend is the ONLY person I'd let outta my sight with any of my good blades...

Yeah, it's amazing how many people have no idea how to treat a knife with any respect. One friend used one of my favorite hunting knives to pry off his valve covers one day. By the time I got through expressing my thoughts on that he never even bothered speaking to me again...and I don't really mind that.

Good review
thanks

CRKT have a very good line of knives
They are very prepared to have good designers and try out different designs
They are quite inovative
But some of them are too quirky, or gimicy
And they use very user friendly easy to sharpen steels, which does not mean the best

And they turn over their line from year to year
So you can pick up for less on eBay a two year old model

They seem to do a pretty good job of matching the steel up to the intended task. the 9Cr18MoV seems to be considered by many to be much like 440C which has been used in a lot of different hunting knives.

great stuff Brian.. those are cool knives.. my wife and I bought one for older son 2 years ago for Christmas.. he loves it.. i was also quite impressed with it when it got it.. the sheath is well made, but could definitely hold the knife deeper...

Thanks Mike, yeah, it could sit a little deeper but the sheath isn't bad at all and I do like how the knife handles.
