I have several friends that are involved in rescue operations. One is on a local search and rescue team here, another one, who is now a police officer, served as a combat medic in Iraq and another that spends half his week as a police detective and the other half as an EMT. It was conversations with these guys that got me thinking about other types of prepping, and other tools I could keep in the truck to help in an emergency, and recent events have reinforced that line of thinking.

One of the ones I decided to try out is the M16-ZER from CRK&T.

The specs are

Open length……….9.25-inches
Closed length……..5.5-inches
Weight…………….6.2-ounces
Blade length………3.75-inches
Blade thickness…...0.138-inches
Blade steel……......AUS8 (RC58-59)
Handle materials....420J2 / Zytel
Lock type………...Liner Lock
Carry system……..4 position clip.

This knife is a variation of the original CRK&T M16 with orange zytel handle scales, and designed especially for emergency rescue personnel. It has a heavy duty blade made of AUS8 stainless steel that has a combo edge with a 1-inch section of very sharp serrations. It features CRK&T’s Auto Lawks redundant security system (which prevents accidental release of the lock) that automatically engages upon opening the blade, and a large flipper that allows for easy deployment of the blade even when wearing heavy rescue gloves.

It has a four-position carry capability, and comes with a left-handed belt clip, a wrench, and extra screws with thread locker on them.

You can see how when the Auto Lawks engages it prevents the liner lock from moving or being accidentally disengaged.

To disengage the system you pull the lawks lever to the rear with a forefinger and push the liner lock over with the thumb.

It is not a small knife by any means. It’s definitely a full sized working knife, with a full sized handle that comfortably fills the hand and is easy to grip in use..

The knife came extremely sharp, and easily cut through four layers of seat belt material.

But I really like how it can be used to cut seat belt material without opening the knife. This could be really handy for avoiding further injury of an upset or panicking individual in an accident, especially in the case of a child who really doesn’t understand what is going on.

The flipper / belt cutter also serves as a guard and will not cut a finger wrapped around it.

I know the knife was designed for these guys and girls.

But I think it is a pretty handy piece of gear to have in the truck console just in case.

Nice review. I was thinking about picking one of these up, I was just hesitating on how well the flipper/belt cutter worked, and if it got in the way at all. Does this one have the glass breaker pommel, and if so, have you tested it?

Great review! Nice to see an unbiased CRKT review. My brother in law is a volunteer firefighter and he has been looking at buying one of these, i will have him check out your review, thanks!

The belt cutter works great. The flipper could be a problem it worn tip-up in pants pockets because of key rings getting caught on it, there is even a warning not to carry it this way due to chance of injury, but tip down I have experienced no problems with it so far. Yes it does have a glass breaker, you can see it in the first two photos, but I have misplaced the photos that high-light it, I'll have to check my other SD cards. No I haven't really tested it yet but it feels solid enough to do the job.

Thank you, I am going to order the smaller M16-13LEK to see how it does. I wish they would offer a version of that one with orange handle scales as well.

Great looking knife .. thank you for the review.. I'm gonna see about getting one of these

Thanks for the review I have some familiy memebers looking for something just like this

I like the look of a lot of CRKTs products, but hear so much negative about them that I really am hesitant to buy one without actually handling them first. I may pick one up and see how I like them myself, seeing they aren't expensive, for the most part.

Thanks for the review bro.

I'm kinda interested in one of these, but the CRKT site says the blade is AUS4, is that an error on their part or a change?

Ah, it appears I was somehow on another page, I suppose the much cheaper price and missing belt cutter should have tipped me off...thanks for the clarification.

No problem man, we all get confused now and then. I have a little experience with AUS6, but none with AUS4.
