I was recently on 1SKS' website, and, having deep sympathy for
CRK&T over their unfortunate "run-in" with U.S. Customs about a
year ago, checked out the listing(s) for their product(s). I
noticed the Ryan Model 7 ; priced VERY reasonably I decided to
make it my next purchase. Does anybody out there own ( & use ) one ? It looks to be well suited to general utility
and self defense. Anybody ?

I got it for Christmas from my stepson and I like it a lot. It fits well in my small/medium hands and has a nice heft to it. I find the blade shape very useful; I love things with belly. The scales look hideous in the pictures, but they look great in your hand. If you have a bunch of plain black-handled folders, it's a good change of pace. It's got the LAWKS system, too. I'm gonna see if I can cram a spring in there.

On the downside, it dulls relatively quickly. I dropped some double-walled boxes and it was dull after the second box. They were refrigerator-size boxes, but I still thought it would last a longer than that. Took no time to sharpen, though. As a comparison, I dropped five more boxes with my Wortac and it barely lost its edge.

A common trick with the Ryan 7 is to remove the gigantic thumbstud and use the sizeable hole as an opener. I removed mine and it works great. It's a good purchase all around: great design, good construction, and serviceable steel.

If you search the archives, you'll find several prior discussions of this knife.

I've got a custom Model 7 and the CRKT version, and like them both. I agree with most of Atomic Zero's comments except that my factory version seems to hold an edge a little better than his.

I had one for about two days. I made the mistake of taking it to work with me and one of my coworkers decided he had to have it. From what he say it does everything he needs it to. He had a part-time lawn service this last summer and used it for that as well as his fulltime job.

That's a good story. I traded messages with Steve Ryan last week and when we connect, I'm going to kid him about the Model 7 gardening tool! A Biohazard Weedwhacker!

LOL! Well i don't know how many weeds he whacked but he did say he cut a lot of weed eater string. As well as open fertilizer bags, cut string off of straw and hay bales and cut chews of tobacco off of plugs. Heck knowing him he may have trimmed weeds with it.

P.S. I didnt know what all a lawn service had to do. He told me about some of his days and I decided I wanted no part of it.

I like the Ryan Model 7 also, its a great beater knife. The edge holds pretty decently for its price, and the LAWKS can come in handy for heavy use. All in all a great deal and worthwhile buy.

To clarify, I agree that the edge holds pretty well for the price. It didn't hold well compared to a reputedly better steel, but good enough for the low price.

P.S. Einlanzer, I think I've played with one of you clan members before. I think. Hard to remember all the clan names.

I've had the Model 7 and liked it. Gave it to a realtive and they love it. But, been looking for information of Steve Ryan, would like to get a custom, and can't find a site for him or one that has any of his customs. any contact info for him?? or Dealers that may have his stuff?

I've been on the same quest, Priest. Apparently, he doesn't have a website and the only way to contact him is through e-mail. Unfortunately, he's not taking orders. The only way to come into one his knives is probably second-hand and very pricey. If you do a search, it should come up with his contact info. Either that or contact Eric Blair, a forumite.

Osograndeknives.com has his name listed under custom makers, but it's always been blank. I know there's a Japanese site out there that has his pictures and some knives for sale. I guess he attracts the Manga crowd.

Hope that helps!
