Ok guy's if you had a choice which would you buy and why. Going to be my edc I have several high end folders and size is not a concern I actually like a big knife. Anyone have one or the other or both? I've never owned a crk but have a few microtech knives and think they are great. Beautifully made and seem strong enough. Let me know your thoughts goid or bad. Thanks for your time!

I can't speak to the DOC, although I have wanted one for awhile now. But I do have an Umnumzaan and it is phenomenal. I think CRK's have a bit better second market, getting you more back if you decide to sell it in the future.

Also, totally an opinion but I feel that the Umnumzaan is more timeless, too.

Great thanks for the reply Fun ken stein I'd have to agree definitely a more timeless design for sure.

For EDC, I think the zaan has a far more practical blade. I thought the DOC had a comfortable handle, but I wasn't impressed by the fat blade.

I have a Umnumzaan and I like it, it's a simple, high quality knife. I've looked at the "Death on Contact" (name still cracks me up) a few times. If it were the size of a SNG I would have tried one by now. The things that keep me from trying the Microtech are the size, weight, and proprietary hardware. The first two are subjective the third may not matter to you since you have other Microtechs. I especially like the blacked out DOCs... ...I would still try one if I found a good deal or trades for one.

Not to add to your conundrum but have you looked at the Sebenza 25? 25 vs DOC may be a little closer comparison. Or how about a Umnum or 25 vs a Strider SNG or even SMF?

I have an sng and love it and really want the smf dgg but the only thing holding me back is the strider obtuse cutting edge I mean they are tanks but they aren't much for slicing, cutting. I'll look into the sebenza25 though thanks.

The DOC us pretty cool but it sticks too high out of the pocket which is something that bugs me and it carries a little fat. With the new clip they feel good in the hand, I'm still waiting for a custom with a CF handle to show up on the secondary market for a decent price to get my grail DOC. I don't like the compound grind for anything other than looks on the production model but that's just preference.

The umnum is an outstanding daily carry knife, I carried one for close to 3 years and still carry one often, that one is a Tanto but I also have a standard profile blade that gets thrown into the mix. It carries like a much smaller knife and sits just right in the pocket. I can say with certainty because I don't baby my stuff that the umnum is a beast of a knife that is very strong but still has a blade profile that allows it to be an excellent slicer.

I love Microtech knives but of the 2 choices that you mentioned I couldn't recommend the umnum more highly.

But look at this:

Seriously though, the DOC is a sweet, well made knife especially if it's an early 2013 version with Elmax...

I've not owned an Umnuumzan, however, I did have a Seb 21 in past (perfect knife for EDC) and currently have a Ti Lock (perfection!) so I'd imagine the Umnum is equally impressive in terms of quality. ;)

Two very different beasts IMO.

how well does your doc cut I have a whale shark and it seems to slice pretty well

It's decent given the tall blade helps a bit in terms of blade geometry. The thinner section where the microtech logo is works better (obviously!) but it would have been awesome to have the entire blade ground like that.

The umnum is my perfect EDC. Carry it a whole lot more than my other high end knives. You can't go wrong. I've always wanted a whaleshark.

Umnumzaan unless your going for a custom DOC. You will never be disappointed with the Umnumzaan.

I have a regular sebenza and a doc... both are fantastic (and very different). In your situation, I'd look to diversify and pick up a CRK. I'm a fan of both brands but CRK quality is unmatched.

I guess the final answer will depend on what you want to do with it... with the umnumzaan being the more versatile of the two, and the DOC being more fun IMO.

DOC is unique, I just like to flip it and look at it. I'd never consider it for an EDC though, unless I was expecting to get into a knife fight that day. With someone that would recognize it and run away screaming, Death on Contact! Death on Contact! :D

id run towards you if i saw that... it is awesome looking! waaay nicer than my tan apocalyptic, and i like mine a lot!

Definitely the Umnumzaan, I have both an umnum and a marfione custom doc. The doc is cool with a nice looking grind but thats just it it's nice looking. The umnum performs much better. For a daily user i would get the umnum.

I looked them up and I'd say while the DOC is an impressive knife, I'd go with the Umnumzaan.
From what I see/read it's lighter in weight and the blade is not so wide, which is a plus as an EDC.
My EDC is a Sebenza and I love the L-UdT.

Why not both? Eventually you ll end up with both of them. Both of them are very nice knives. I think the DOC is more cool looking while the Umnumzaan is more classy looking. Like wearing sports watch like Seiko or classy watch like Tissot.
