CRK Umnumzaan up and down play

I just bought an Umnumzaan secondhand from a reputable knife nut, and it has a tiny amount of up and down play. As this is now my most expensive knife in my collection (and my first CRK) I am extremely disappointed. The seller did not disclose this to me either. What should I do; should I be upset with the seller? Or is there something I can do to remedy this? Maybe something to do with the ceramic ball interface. Then again, I could always send it to Chris Reeve but I don't want to have to wait another month to play with my fancy new Umnumzaan. Thanks guys, hoping to get some great responses from my first post on here!

Send it in to Chris Reeve, but call 1st....

No other choice...

Def. return the knife. No reason you should keep it and have to send it in when the seller never mentioned the blade play.

If you picked it up for a very good price, keep it and send it to CRK. If you paid typical used prices, send it back to the seller.

This is what I would do. Good luck. CRK is amazing. Do not be upset with the brand. :)

I'll second the notion to call CRK first. Make sure they know the exact circumstances. If you send the knife to them and they determine that the blade play was caused by flicking the knife open you may not have a leg to stand on. Call them first and see what they recommend or just see if the seller will refund your money.

Send the knife back to the seller for a refund. Take the money and buy from a seller who will disclose all issues (or lack thereof).

Best of luck.

Your options are:
1. Buy a knife in new/unused condition and be the "first owner"
2. Return the knife to the seller for a refund, explain why it went back.
3. Send the knife to CRK and see if it can be fixed.

It's your call, but that is what is available to you.

you can also try to replace the rubber o rings on the thumb lugs. when they wear out, they get very flexible, stretched out, & can crack, new ones make everything tighter,i have noticed.it also seems to make the lockup earlier, too. when the knife is open, if the o rings are pushing away from the thumb lugs on the blade side,, you should replace them. I think its 060 o rings in the plumbing dept, they work great for less than 2 bucks and youll have about 10 for that price...

I'd Definitely return it to the seller. Up and down play on a CRK is not something a seller should have forgotten to post in his sale thread. Good luck with whatever you

decide to do.

I think I'll try that one first, and to everyone who asked, I spent 470 shipped from Canada with a wicked edge on it as well as a mr roper. If that doesn't work, I'll be sending it to CRK. Heard nothing but good things about their service.

post the results if you replace the o rings ; curious to see if it solves the problem.home depot & lowes have those o rings in the plumbing dept, they work great.

When you say a "tiny amount" do you mean you can see and feel an amount of back and forth play in the blade, or do you mean "I can see the thumb stud lifting off the frame when I put enough pressure on the spine to flex the lock" tiny amount ? :)

With enough force on many umunzaan's you can force movement up and down it's more like a wiggle that you wouldn't notice in normal use...I've noticed this even on a new piece at a dealer. They're not fixed blades, they are plenty sturdy enough...

This exactly.

Since the o rings make contact with the handle, It might act as a shock absorber;maybe that explains the slight play. I ve never really noticed it myself, and I cant see that lockbar unlocking itself given the pressure that's on it in the locked position...

There seems to be a tiny amount of lock flex inherent in the design of the umnumzaan

I've owned a good few and all of them including the one in my pocket right now have had it.

I noticed this as well on two brand new ones at a dealer. Seems to be normal.
