Not a "which to buy thread" because I already own both and they are my favorite knives. I am just wondering which of these others on the forum like better, because I just can't pick a favorite! Every day it's a process trying to decide which to pocket. I actually wish I could find a definite reason why one is better. I would flip the other and settle into a 1 knife edc.

It seems like most on here prefer the XM since it gets tons of recommendations while the Umnumzaan sits unrecognized in the shadow of the Sebenza. I love the Umnum because it is tough, handy in a number of grips, and the only knife I have ever owned that feels like it will never "wear out". It doesn't hurt that it also cuts like a mini light saber.

The XM is just a total tank! Feels like it could cut any other folder in half and locks up like it doesn't even have a pivot. Certainly doesn't cut like the Umnumzaan but does the job good enough for my edc needs, which aren't cutting apples and such.

So for those who have handled/owned both these knives, which do you prefer and why?

Both excellent knives. I have been carrying the XM-18 more recently, but the Umnumzaan still gets some pocket time. I think the ergonomics on the XM-18 is the deciding factor for me. The umnumzaan is thinner and I think may carry in my pocket better, but when cutting I have not yet found a knife that matches the XM-18 for ergonomics. Very comfortable to use and hold. I especially like the flipper as a finger stop for tougher applications.

I prefer the Umnumzaan by a wide margin for a few reasons.

  1. Cutting performance is much better.
  2. Ceramic ball RIL. I'm a fan! I would love to see this adapted to the Sebenza / other knives.
  3. Ergos are better in my opinon. There was a time when I felt if the knife didn't hug your hand completely (ala Military) it wasn't good, however I think my views have changed a bit. The Umnumzaan feels great in a variety of grips and positions and never feels insecure.
  4. Simplicity! The Umnumzaan has half the parts the XM-18 does. Elegent simplicity leading to perfection.

My vote goes to the Umnumzaan. I have both and the XM mostly sits while the Umm gets most of my pocket time and the SnG gets the second most carry.
