Well, I received this knife today after a purchase on Ebay. I paid $51.00 including shipping.
This is the large Apache based on the S-2 design. It has black aluminum scales and the steel liner lock. Dual thumb studs pocket clip.
I like the shape of the S-2 blade. This one is partially serrated. The grind is very good and the knife is very sharp right out of the box. lock up is excellent and it passes the spine wack test as do every one of the CRKT knifes that I own (7) so far. The blade is coated in a teflon finish that has a grayish color with a lighter colored speckle pattern. The clip allows the knife to ride low in the pocket. All in all a very nice knife for the money, especially at a deep discount o the original retail price.

BTW

I have the CRKT 7012LE and the 7012B both also S-2 based designs, the LE model has a blue aluminum handle and the 1* designation the 7012B has the black handle and A
and teflon inish but is the mid size.

All 3 of the blades are ATS 34. These knies are just about the perfect EDC in my book with a great blade shape and an even better price.

Slicer,

Is the clip tip up or down carry?

How's the opening action on the Apache as opposed to your other CRKTs? I've heard that it's their smoothest and fastest opening folder. I haven't handled the Apache yet but of the handful of CRKT designs that I have handled, opening the blade was a bit awkward for me for those few tries while at the knife store. It seems CRKT tends to put the thumb studs very close to the handles on their knives when they're closed, making it a little hard for me to "feel" the stud. Is the Apache's thumb stud as close to the handle as the other CRKTs you own?

Lastly, from the picture on the internet of the Apache opened, it looks like it has a bit of a guard if you can call it that. Can that be used as a flipper when the blade is closed? It's hard for me to tell since I haven't seen pictures of the knife closed.

Well, I've only had it one day. It was stiff to open in the begining but is getting smoother after playing with it a while. There is a guard at the choil but it will not act as a flipper. The blade is tip down, I prefer tip up but can live with this. The studs are located far enough from the handle for me though I have missed the thumb stud while doing "blind" openiing of the knife and my thumb has slipped of the stud a few times. All in all for the money it's a great knife. I think I'm going to carry it as an EDC while on duty. I think it is a large knife for most plain clothes EDC use. The mid size Apache might be a better knife for general use.

Slicer, how is your Apache holding up? I just bought the apache II on ebay today and am looking forward to getting it. I opted for the standard blade model that's 4 1/8" closed.

Fine knife. First knife I got. Made all the mistakes taht a first time knife owner will make with a knife.

Dropped it on the ground, scuffing the tip due to lightly throwing it at a box a foot away. Also tried cutting through mwtal twist ties.

Have learned from mistakes though, never again.
