Crkt Apache II or Mini AFCK part serrated

Hey guys. I like the way the Apache feels. At 4 1/8" closed I like the size better. I also prefer the plain edge. However, the mini afck with part serrations is only 6 bucks more and is a bit bigger which might make it more versatile. Will the serrations be a problem if I use it for food prep as well as other utility chores? Which one should I choose? I know that the Apache will be flawless in terms of QC but the mini afck might not be. Thanks guys.

I take it both are in either ATS-34 or 154CM?

Go for the Apache, the aluminium handles are FAR more rigid and wont flex like the Mini AFCK.

However, if it is an M2 mini AFCK, well for that steel, I put up with the problems of the AFCK series.

i would get the AFCK, ya can get them cheap at www.newgraham.com, $60 i think - i have the AFCK w/the black plain edge blade and really like it - how come ya want a small 1? anyway the AFCK is a hechuva knife, IMHO

I recently purchased a partially ATS-34 mini-AFCK from Bayou-Lafourche at a terrific price. The nice feature of this knife is the SS liners. I dislike serrations, but I don't mind them on this knife, as they only cover about 25-30% of the edge.

The only problem with the mini-AFCK is that the clip gets in the way for left hand openings and impedes the superb ergonomics of the knife. I used a dremel to relieved it enough for a good grip and then bead blasted it. Makes the knife, IMHO.

I haven't really dealt with the Apache, but CRKT makes a great product for the money. I think if you can get the mini-AFCK for a deal then it is the knife to buy. Check out the "For Sale-Dealer" page and look for Bayou's ad. They've probably got a couple left.

Oh, BTW. The older round hole AFCK's are much nicer to me. I can't stand the oval hole!

The Apache is solid, but I never liked the blade to handle ratio. Too much handle, not enough blade. The AFCK is superb and much more ergonomic.. Given the choice, I would go with the AFCK. Consider that G-10 does not feel cold to the touch in winter or hot in summer like metal handles do; it does not scuff or loose it's finish as aluminum does; and the design of the AFCK's handle provides a guard against having your hand slip onto the blade. Also, the satin finish blade of the AFCK does not retain moisture like bead blasted blades do.

Thanks for the input guys. If the serrations weren't on the BM this wouldn't even be an issue. It looks like such a small amount serrated. Will this hurt in using the knife for food chores?

I am becoming a CRKT fan after picking up a couple, but I would choose the BM. I think you will like the G-10 better, and the part serrated blade may come in handy. Don't get me wrong about the Apache it is a good one too.

For food chores, I don't think serrations will negatively affect cutting. Look at the old Ginsu knives. Besides, Benchmade's serrations cut smoothly.

Ordinarily, I might agree that a significant difference between blade and handle length is a negative. It flat seems like better engineering to me when the difference is small.

Having said that, there is some merit to long handles. I haven't yet carried it, but I own an Apache II, as well as the large Apache. The II, by blade length is certainly a mid-sized knife. But, the length of the handle makes it the only mid-size knife I've handled thus far, where I can get a full grip on the thing, without my pinkie out there waving in the breeze.

On the full size Apache, I like the extra handle length at least as much. It is long enough for me to grab it in my fist, and have enough left over at both ends to use as a "blunt instrument." (I know there is a word I want here, but it won't emerge.) AHA! Impact weapon! That is it. Yes, there is enough machined aluminum at both ends to thump somebody quite effectively.

Seems to me that is one of the biggest draws to the Gunting, it's ability to be used without opening the blade. The Apache probably falls far short of the Gunting in that department, but it ought not to be overlooked either.

Thanks for the help guys. I went with the AFCK. I got it from Roger at Bayou Laforche. I can't wait. I would highly recommend Bayou Laforche. Great prices, very friendly, and excellent customer service.
