The first knife I ever bought for myself was a CRKT Apache. My dad was anti-everything so I had a late start on collecting.

Bought it at knife store when I didn't know much of anything about knives. Mostly I bought it for the looks, and didn't know anything about the steel. Had and used it for years till I started learning more about CRKT liner locks. Mine hasn't failed(yet) and was wondering about other people's experinces with this knife. Mine just says "Apache" on it.

Who else has and used this knife? Comments on the lock?

I had an Apache III for a while. Nice knife all around. If I remember right, it had ATS-34 steel. Mainly sold it because I prefer G-10 or micarta to aluminum scales. Selling it had nothing to do with function or quality.

You could have done a lot worse as a first purchase. CRKT isn't like buying a Benchmade, Spyderco, etc., but they make good knives in my experience with them. I still have a couple of CRKTs that I use when I travel.

I have two of them, the first is the Apache which I purchased in '97 or so.

Have used it a lot, mostly working up deer. The lock up is still like new, and the ats34 has been great. Despite the thin looking liner, it is quite stout, and locks up tight, with the engagement a little under 50% as it always has been.

I don't do spine whack tests, as I don't feel that those tests are pertinate to the way that I use a knife.

The second is an Apache ll limited edition, black epoxy coated blade. Snagged it from ebay recently. It displays the same attributes as its bigger brother.

I wouldn't classify either of these as extreme use sharpened prybars. As far as general working knives with good slicing abilities, I would say that they are good buys for the money, and more than adequate for most uses.

Too bad CRKT discontinued them and the use of ats34.

I sometimes still feel the urge to carry it. I have pryed with it before and nothing happen. It still has the 2 little clicks when the lock engages. Its the only knife I've had for years, and its still in 1 piece.

I think I will carry it tonight.

Carry it, use it! I really don't think it will ever have any collector's value, and one sees them from time to time on ebay.
