I've carried a BearClaw for a few years and (though I'm far from qualified as a self-defense person) it would work OK. I've done a few practice sessions with it against old sheets of OSB and an orange barrel. It is definately a slasher, maybe if you ground a swedge into it it would stab. Regular grip allows for a standard slashing motion, reverse grip seems like it would work best moving like you're throwing a punch but aiming a little off so the blade hits and not your fist.
However, I haven't ever considered my BearClaw a good choice for SD. It's a wonderful cutter, boxes, tape, rope, burlap, subs, wire, etc. For SD I have prepared more to use my straight edged knives CRKT BladeLock, SOG FlashII, or Typhoon bali, the BearClaw looks badass but it just doesn't feel right when I swing it.
As for carry, try wearing it horizontally on your belt just above your pocket. You'll have to slide the clip through a belt hole and it helps if the tip of the sheath gets pulled under a belt-loop when you cinch the belt up.
