I'm a newbie here, but I want to firstly thank everyone for their willingness to share their knowledge and advice. I have recently become very interested in knives, and I am trying to build a collection, but beginning with knives for strictly utilitarian purposes first. My father was kind enough to buy a Spyderco Native for me while we perused a knife store searching for his birthday present. So, I have a decent, edc pocketknife. Now I'm searching for an inexpensive fixed blade to be an all purpose knife--skinning, chopping, prying, etc. I also don't want anything very large, preferably 8-10 inches overall, and something cheap in the event that I lose or damage the knife. I have looked at the Kershaw Echo, Benchmade Gamer, and the CRKT Big Sky series of hunters. Eknifeworks.com currently sells the "Big Sky" for 15.00 with sheath. To me it sounds like a good deal that I am fairly set upon. Does anyone have any experience with these knives? Can anyone offer advice?

I appreciate the help. Thanks.

Welcome to BF.

I have an older one of the Bridger skinner models, and for fifteen bucks it's a good deal. The sheath on mine is leather and well made. The handle fits the hand well, but the Kraton is a little too grippy for me. By that, I mean that several areas including the finger choil, are a little blister prone if you do a lot of/heavy cutting. The AUS6 blade isn't the best, but it isn't bad, either.

If you're looking in that price range, I would definitely look at some of the Mora type knives on www.ragweedforge.com. They have some with better carbon steels or a laminated stainless blade that are unbelievable for the money.

For a little more, check out a Queen fixed blade from someplace like www.cumberlandknifeworks.com They have D2 blades which will hold an edge quite a bit longer than the AUS6 blade on that CRKT, in my experience.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Thanks for your help Sharpthangs. I'm not quite sure what I'll do just yet, but the Queen hunters are looking very nice. I had not looked at them until you told me about them, I appreciate it.

The Queen Premium Hunters have a full tang and are quite a chunk. I just got the drop point model and haven't had a chance to put it through its paces yet. My only quibble with it is the decoration they put on the sheath, but that's just me.

Glad I could help.
