Quite the drag. I feel for them. I'm surprized that Customs would go into an Oregon firm, considering that autos (& therefore gravity knives and balisongs) are legal. This could get more complicated in the future.

Hoodoo:

Read your thread, this truely sucks we all better be very careful of how we use and portray our knives in the future. I agree with Sal and others why only CRKT???? Damn shame indeed.

This should concern every knifemaker and company in the country. Perhaps this is a "dry run" for things to come?!

Perhaps CRKT is being singled out now, because they are a new company, and therefore an easy target. And yes, it is very odd that this is happening in Oregon where, it seems to me, knife laws are more liberal than in many other states.

First off I can not believe how small the response in both this forum and KF. has been. If this ends up being a test case and it sounds like it will be. We are all in for a world of hurt. We need more info on what is really going on. Someone needs to Get Mr. Bremmer over here to talk about what is going on. If it this is as bad as I think it is every knife related company and all the groups such as the Guild and the ABS etc... need to get off their butt's and put together a legal fund to help fight this thing. Hell I will contribute to it. This has to be stopped dead in it's tracks here and now before it gets really out of control!

Regards,

Tom Carey

I haven't personally confirmed it, but a new post in the thread at KF seems to have done so. In the last post MrKnifeGuy said:

"I talked to CRKT today to confirm this because ironically I just returned an older version of the M16 for one with a Carson-flipper. I also received the following e-mail from Carrie Trujillo at CRKT:

"Mr. KnifeGuy,
We are currently trying to resolve an issue with U.S. Customs that effect the whole knife industry. I guess we just had the dumb luck of being in the wrong place at the right time. It basically effects all of our folding knives, locking liners, and for the time being we cannot ship these products. We will win this battle with Customs, losing is not an option for us or the knife industry."

Sad but true..."

It seems real to me. Carrie Trujillo is the CRKT representative who answered an e-mail I sent to them a while back about getting a missing part for my PECK. This is not good at all. God only knows what's next if they're confiscating M16's. To my way of thinking that's one of their more innocuous larger models, but then again I just got a "small" HI khukuri that's 15" long and 0.5" thick. I guess it's just what you use for reference.

I don't unerstand. How does customs get involved unless they're shipping into or out of the country? I'm comfused? Doh!

First the guns, then the knives. In CA, I heard that now they want to ban scoped rifles. They-re telling hunters that if they were really good at hunting, they wouldn't need scope..............ooops, this is BladeForums. I'm sorry, I'm in a bad mood. I hope CRKT gets their stock back.

KingKnives, the knives are imported from Taiwan, that is why Customs can control stuff. Anyways...

Would I be going a little overboard if I said that this is why we need militia groups? I'm not promoting violence against any government agencies, but don't militia groups kind of get the point across to the government that some people actually prefer being free? If they can ban POCKET KNIVES, what is to stop them from banning everything else? I was under the conclusion that U.S. citizenship gave you certain rights!

Kingknives: CRKT does the R&D, marketing and customer service stateside but has the pieces made in Taiwan. Customs declared them switchblades which are illegal for importation under a 1958 law crafted after the legislature saw too many "B"-grade teen angst movies.

Check the other threads: http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum54/HTML/003361-2.html (especially my notes on why this is a disaster even for companies that make 'em in the US and for ALL of us blade-packers...)
http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum52/HTML/000812.html - this thread has suggestions on what to do if Customs doesn't back down fairly soon. Sal's current position is that it's too soon for anyone to "jump in with both feet" and he's *right* - but at some point, we better figure out which major friends in DC can help by "going to bat for us" against Customs.

Guys lets table this till Paul speaks up. Right now a lot of things are up in the air.

Hi Gentlemen,

sorry but lets get serious.
you have this knive law since 1958? (when i was 2 years) - - - and you still have knives that could be opened by a flick of the wrist!

YOU HAVE LOST !!

Not some folders - but ALL! Because every folder could be opened with a flick: gripp the blade and flick the handle!
The law did not say how gravity must work - or- how much force/time - or - .....?
Bite handle and shake your head till its open.

You lost because you are guilty not to change this stupid law !

RELAX: i just read how much humor you all show in this sites and wanted to joke with you!

Ähhhhhh did I?

I called US Customs in Portland late yesterday and they returned the call this morning. I mentioned that I was just a citizen and had heard that CRKT had a shipment of knives seized as gravity knives, and was wondering if anymore information was avialable. I mentioned that some agencies make a public record available in such actions but I didn't know what their policy was. They politely said that they could not provide any information or comment on the case. I mentioned that there was a lot of discussion in some of the internet forums on the matter and that some were writing their representatives. They said that people certainly had such a right to do so but they couldn't comment on the case.

I guess we'll have to wait for either a press release from customs or more information from CRKT.

Oh $hit!!! I stay off the net for a week and all hell breaks loose. We lost internet access at work because a gay employee 9no offense to this sector of the community intended) spent 75hrs last month surfing gay and porno sites, so we all lost access.

I'm shocked to hear about this BS. I'm not from your neighborhood, but I share the same interests. I saw how our government just screwed up our firearms laws and strict control (limiting numbers of firearms) is on the way here. Luckily the blade scene is not seen as much of a threat (for now) so autos, balisongs are not a problem if you have the bucks.

I can't help thinking that there could be another agenda here. Your government keeps screwing with the right to bear arms, one of the foundations of the American constitution.
It started with 10 magazines.
There was always the non auto knives restriction.
What next... no guns & knives......

I cringe if I think what the future will bring us. America is a big country, you have a lot of friends and a loud voice when you stand together. Stand up and be heard....

BTW, if anything major happens will someone please email me. I can only visit ther internet cafe about once a week. Also, if they bring out a special CRKT knife for the occassion, please email me. My thoughts and support are with you all in this dark hour.

Andre

I think at least we can have our representatives look into this for us. Isn't that what they are elected and paid to do? I think it is better to be safe and write than be sorry we didn't later on.
www.house.gov www.senate.gov

The following is what I sent to my representatives. It may not be the most eloquent message but not too shabby. Please feel free to copy and send to yours if you don't have the time or desire to write your own. Don't forget to take my name off of the end and add your own.

This is just a quick message that I would like to bring to your attention and hopefully you can help right this wrong....

U.S. Customs recently confiscated the majority of the inventory of a knife manufacturer named Columbia River Knife and Tool located in Oregon. It seems that Customs is using a VERY broad interpretation of knife importation laws regarding "switchblade" knives and applying this to Columbia River's liner-lock type of folding knife.

A liner-lock is a type of locking mechanism used in the majority of quality folding knives produced these days. It is NOT an assisted opening type of mechanism (e.g.- switchblade). It just locks the blade open to prevent the sharp blade from accidentally closing on one's fingers.

If this type of folding knife is judged to be illegal to import and, in turn, labeled a switch-blade or gravity knife then every major knife manufacturer will be negatively affected, assuming they can even stay in business.

As a knife collector, this matter is important to me and I would greatly appreciate it if you could look into this matter.

Thank you - David Fallert

Don't sweat the details....

This is a LOT more serious than we've even considered.

The real potential target of all this is the DEALERS, especially gun dealers who almost always sell knives.

If this decision is allowed to stand, Mike Turber could face a felony bust for shipping me a D2-M Sifu.

Think about that a sec. In the manufacturer/dealer/end user chain, where are the Fed felony busts available?

The dealers.
