CRKT Carson Flip VS Kershaw Safemaker? Same idea?

Are they pretty much the same thing?

I'm mainly referring to the CRKT M16 line with the Carson Flipper vs something like a Kershaw Leek.

Are they practically the same and on the same level of legality. I think the Kershaws have an internal spring, so i'm guessing that makes it in the more "illegal" range of knives?

I'm thinking of picking up a Kershaw tomorrow so I was just wondering.

I'm not sure. Discuss.

"Safemaker" is a push dagger made by Cold Steel.

Believe you mean "Speedsafe" assisted opening system that Kershaw offers on a lot of its knives.

Here is what Kershaw has to say about it:

To my knowledge, barring possible local idiotic ordinances in places like NY City, assisted openers are fully legal. The blade is held closed. you have to start it with your thumb and get the blade about 1/3 open before the opener takes over. It is not a switch blade or gravity knife.

A lot of people like the Speedsafe. A lot of folks like the flipper. Think it comes down to personal preference of what works for the individual.

Personally, I have no use for either. Personal preference. I have nothing against them. They just aren't my style.

Add: I think the CRKT "Outburst" mechanism is a closer match to the "Speedsafe"than the Carson flipper is. Although all three are mechanisms to open a knife fast.

Ahhh.. I have no idea where the term "Safemaker" came from as I don't look at CS knives lol...

But uhh I live in California, right now I had a huge brainfart, so... I think AOs might be illegal here.. I don't exactly remember... But if they were, I'm sure they would make Wal-Marts get rid of them.

Oh well. I say, "As long as Wal-Mart sells it, it's legal"

Assists are still legal in California.

The Carson flipper isn't even spring-loaded. so no way it can be illegal. It's just an ingenious way to use the detent against itself on opening.

The closest comparison with CRKT would be their Outburst system.

Alright, awesome, I was sorta getting the impression that my Carson Flip style CRKT would be illegal.. Dunno why.

Anywho, what about Kershaw Speedsafes?
