Hello BF,

I am looking to purchase a chopper for camping and bushcraft. My budget is in the $50-$100 range, lower the better. I narrowed my choices down to two:

CRKT Chanceinhell
Kershaw Camp 14

I dont have any experience with choppers/machetes. As always I appreciate your feedback and value your opinions.

Thanks,
Aaron

Camp 14 is thicker and will be a better chopper if you're going for anything beyond vegetation and such. What exactly are you gonna be chopping though, when it comes to machetes and choppers THAT bit of info plays a bit role. Are you just chopping brambles vegetation, or are you planning on chopping thicker woods?

Personally, with $50-100 budget I'd go with the Condor Golok, though.

Mostly chopping deadwood for firewood, 2"-4" diameter.

For a tropical jungle @ high humidity with plethora of dense to light-hanging vegetation, i take Halfachance.

CRKT Chanceinhell
Pros-Ergo (pistol grip) rubber handle, 5 lanyard holes, compact size overall.
Cons- OK sheath

Kershaw Camp 14
Pros- Neat sheath with a lock, nice reach with 14” blade, reminds me of the Tang dynasty Dao.
Cons- A bit too long of blade for me especially tight spaces

How would a Schrade schf9 be. I don't like the Taylor schrades but I have read good things about this one. I have seen it in stores and looks hefty.

I have had the 14 and 18 and I now own the chanceinhell. I would go with the crkt even though the sheath is not as nice as the kershaw.

I haven't handled either of these blades, so my opinion isn't worth much, but if I had to choose between these two I'd pick the Chanceinhell. Any long chunk of sharpened steel can hack through deadwood; what's going to matter to you is how comfortable the blade is to work with. The CRKT model has a very nice looking handle, which I think would handle admirably after an afternoon of chopping. The last thing you want to deal with on a camping trip is a hand that's crippled and calloused by the time you get a fire started.

Thanks for the replies BF! I decided to go with the Chanceinhell, I've seen YouTube vids and what sold me was the blade length and the ergo handle. As always your replies and opinions are always valued!
