This blade is first of all a defensive knife, second of all a defensive knife, and third of all a defensive knife that can be used for utility. If one were to carry the Companion for light utility tasks and in case of a need to save one's butt, which is better? Plain or serrated? Or is it just a matter of personal taste? Thanks!

Hey Cray!
It's all a matter of personal taste, dude.
Personally, I prefer plain edge, so that's the format I got my Companion in.
Another thing about the Companion, the sheath generally sux by most accounts.
Mine stuck like Hell the first week I had it, then seemed to "break in".
It comes with two sheaths, but I only use the one with the long slots and neck knife holes on the end.
It's a very good knife for the money and gives ya OPTIONS!! I like that in a knife system!:D

Hmm, "fighters" are usually fixed blade and plain edge, "self-defense" are usually folders or neck knives with serrations (or at least most often advertised that way-like Spydie Civilian or CS Vaquero Grande). Weird, ain't it?

I'd go for plain edge, serrations are a bitch to sharpen. I can't see how they would help in a defensive role, so why put up with the hassle?

Well, they do help rip through things, provided they're kept sharp enough. I've never liked them, however.

Thanks for the info guys!

Regarding the sheaths, I see that Normark makes a sheath for this knife. You don't even have to send him your knife, as far as I know! A plain edge and a custom sheath may be a good way to go for me. I'm lusting after the KFF Professional as well...

Hey Cray...

Definately Plain Jane Baby!! :)

And Yes I do make a Custom sheath for the Companion...

Drop me a note Anytime with any questions you may have..

Thanks:)

If you think you might need to saw through something I guess a serrated edge would be the right choice. Personally I do not like the look of a serrated edge. That is all the reason I require not to own one.

I got the serrated version, see? :D

Actually, I really prefer plain edge, but this is all the store had, and I didnt want to wait. Our big gunshow is coming, so I will probably pick up a plain edge and have a set.

i got mine (sheath) from on/scene tactical, and the normarks are good 2 i have heard - imho ya will need a sheath ya might as well budget it in w/the knife - the 2 that come w/it are CHEESY - but get a good sheath, and other than being a little heavy, ya got 1 helluve knife w/very little $$$ spent - ya cant beat them imho, i love the kaspe r designs.....

I've looked through all the books trying to verify those definitions. I'll keep looking.

I just traded Maurice for the serrated version. it was a good trade. Now I can evaluate how much I like this blade. it is my first Kasper design. I'm hoping Santa brings me the KFF Professional under the tree this year!

If yu have any sharpening skills (or own a Sharpmaker 204), go for the plain. It comes plenty sharp, and can be easily kept ready to shave. Great knife for the bucks. I do suggest buying one small Tek-Lok for use on the vertical belt sheath. Just remove the original clip, which isn't much, drill out one hole, and behold! A great new carry that won't fall off when you need it.:D :D
