Hey all. I was recommended the CRKT Companion, and I was wondering what yall thought about this knife? The good, the bad, and the ugly? Another thing, is where can I buy one new the cheapest?

TYA.
John.

Well, I'm no expert, but I've owned a Companion for about 2 years now, and it's a great knife, but a bit heavy for it's size, in my opinion. If you aren't sure, I'd suggest you compare it to a Kershaw Vertigo for another option in that same category.

CRKT Companion: I liked the look of the knife, especially the handle, and gave it a shot as an EDC self-defence fixed blade. Result: said knife flunked my EDC test but lives now in my bedside table drawer with CS Norse Hawk and 2D Maglite for those middle-of-the-night moments when the power goes out and I have to go and wake up the night watchman, not sure if he's just sleeping or has had his skull split by the machete of a band of robbers (check my location if this sounds unlikely). It's the kind of knife I like to pick up and clip to my wb for checking the compound, because it handles extremely well, thanks to the well designed handle.

CRKT Companion failed to become my EDC for
-sloppy finish and the overall cheap look (cheap is good but it mustn't show)
-heavy weight (full tang on the very broad handle)
-poorly executed sheath(s).

The sheath factor was decisive. The CRKT hard plastic just doesn't work for me. For 24/7 wb carry I found both sheaths uncomfortable. Kydex with tek-lok would be so much better, but I just can't see myself having one made for such a cheap knife.

So my verdict is: decently good buy for the money but no EDC.

ps My EDC fixed is now Spyderco Perrin. Well 'ard!

hmm...thanks for the reply guys, I understand the sheath factor, and so I do plan on getting a kydex sheath for this knife.

Since the Companion has a wide/full tang, can this knife hold up to lightweight prying action?

EDIT: also, how effectively can you chop with this knife if need be?

The Companion is a defensive knife designed for carry ony our person for dealing with some normal utility and "social situations".
If you are facing situations where you need to pry or chop, you've got the wrong knife. Get a Busse or a Cold Steel Recon Scout/Trail Master if you need a strong knife to chop and maybe pry with. Better yet, get a decent pack axe and a pry bar. ;)

They have been a good one for us. A little heavy, maybe, nice knife for the $$! Paul

Oh, this will be a primarily defensive knife, I have my folder for more normal utility use. I was just wondering if it could stand up to the task in a pinch.

thanks :)

John

I personally don't think it's too heavy at all- in fact, it's really comfortable IWB despite the clacker of a sheath it's shipped with.

I carry the Companion as SD knife(one of my fixed blades)and I love it.The weight is fine with me.I carry mine IWB with 1 of the sheaths it came with.Yees,it is a cheapie but it serves it's purpose. The knife does'nt rattle when I wear it IWB.(One day,I will have a nice sheath made for it). I picked mine up on Ebay for about $35.00 NIB.

Nice knife, not really that heavy.
the finish gripe is genuine... bead blasting holds moisture. It can still rust lightly.
Don't get partially serrated version, and get a good custom sheath.

Phil, very nice custom sheath. Boosts usability of the knife considerably.

One thing I forgot to mention: I seem to be jumping or falling into rivers a lot, and my EDC sees a lot of salt water as well. So bead blast finish won't fly, like calyth pointed out.

Like I said, it's a knife i'd like to carry.

I owned one of these for a short time, and for the money I thought it was a very good knife. First off, it was designed as a fighter pure and simple. I would not pry or chop with it at all - hatchets and prybars are MUCH cheaper than knives. I didn't find it that heavy, but I'm not a small guy (6'2", 215 lbs.) The blade steel isn't really all that great. I used mine for daily utility for a while and it got sharp easily, but didn't hold the edge long. On a self defense knife, all that matters is that the edge is sharp when you need it, and you know how to use it.

Overall, I think it performs well for what it is - a cheap, well made self defense knife. I think the design is great! If you like it a lot, get a better sheath made for it.
