Hi
Well I finally got my Corkum Tanto first strike. Question: For those who have one -- are they any good as a slicer, or even cutting open boxes, or are they strictly for thrusting and penetration? Hope I didn't make a mistake buying it.

I have a 4.5 inch one and it can do quite a bit. I battons wood well, whittles wood quite well, and with that robust tip it can destroy cardboard fairly well. It also can be used for light prying and is a breeze to sharpen. For the money it's a real great beater of a knife. I've had mine for two years of hard use and it hasn't let me down yet. You have got yourself a great beater!

Thanks That is encouraging indeed. Any particular method of sharpening? Doyou carry yours on your belt?

Well, with it's tanto grind I tend to have a 15 degree micro bevel on the blade that I used my Sharpmeker for. The Sharpmaker is a Spyderco product and can be found by doing a Google search. They ussually run under 50 dollars for quite a great tool. Using the 30 degree inclusive edge I can pretty much anything. Mine rides nicely on my belt or strapped to my pack if I'm going on a hike. Good luck with yours!
