Woohoo!!!! I was out doing a little shopping with the wife today, and stopped by a Remington store at the mall. Seeing the selection of knives, I had to play around with them a bit.
They had an aluminum handled Native that looked pretty sweet, but wasn't for me. It opened quite hard. Between the hard opening and the ULTRA-SLIPPERY aluminum handle, I could barely get this thing open with two hands!!! Next...
Next was a Native with Zytel handle. I would have liked to have tried it out, but the darn thing didn't work. It was stuck open!!! That's strange stuff for a lockback!!! My big Buck has never done that.
Last in the Spyderco section was a Calypso Jr. The handle felt like the same cheap plastic that's used on my $15.00 Buck jack knife. I expected a lot better out of a $50.00 knife.
Let's just say that Spyderco was having a very bad day, and so was I until until I hit the CRKTs. After reading all of the controversy regarding the Crawford/Kasper lately, I had to give one a feel. Wow!!! Now this is my kind of knife!!! The Crawford/Kasper feels like a real knife in your hands. The weight is just enough to make it feel rugged, but not enough to make you feel like you're holding an anvil. This sucker is very comfortable too, and razor sharp. I walked out of the store a happy guy.
Oh yah, a little about the Remington store guy. I almost left without buying a single thing. He was jerk enough to throw two of the knives against the wall for not working properly..... one which was stuck open!!!! What a jerk!!! He even went as far as to say that he didn't buy any of the knives from Spyderco or CRKT anymore. The tips all kept breaking off on him. He only buys Benchmades now. I felt like telling him to buy a real pry bar instead of using his knives.
So what did I learn from all this? First off, the Crawford/Kasper is an awesome blade for the price. I gave my Point Guard to the wife, and will now use the Crawford/Kasper as my everyday carry. I also learned that Spyderco may not be the brand for me. I sure hope that my Military on order will be better than what I saw today. Last, I learned that Remington hires some real jackarses. I may just have to send an email off to their customer service department.
