One of my friends has this knife:

It's discontinued now, but I was wondering about the lock. it looks like CRKT's version of the Axis lock to me. The AG Russell page says the lock is a version of Blackie Collin's "bolt action" lock. I don't see CRKT using this lock on any of their knives now. It'd be cool if they did. Does Benchmade have some sort of patent on the Axis lock preventing others from using it? Also, am I correct in thinking the Benchmade Levitator lock works similarly to the Spyderco compression lock, except for having a pin attached the the liner to engage the tang? The operation of the Rolling lock is also not perfectly clear to me... it appears to work like an Axis lock except you don't directly pull the stop bar back, rather pushing a button that does the same thing? Thanks.

The D.O.G., the axis, the arc, the ultralock, the ball lock, are all similar to the bolt action in that they push a block into a notch in the tang to keep the blade from closing.

Who's got priority is sometimes a matter of who gets to the patent office first.

According to the Blade Magazine story on the original custom D.O.G. lock, he developed it independently and then found it was very close to the bolt action, and asked if it would be all right to use it.

Benchmade licensed the axis from Bill McHenry and Jason Williams. You can read about BM's locks on their website at http://www.benchmade.com/about_knives/locking_mechanisms.asp

I like the framelock: I can see and touch every part of it in action. MUCH easier to understand! :)

while were on the topic of D.O.G.

what do ppl think about about that tiny pocket clip???

The lock feels more like the lock on the SOG assisted openers. Whossnames... not the Twitch or Blink, but the others...

The pocket clip is neat. I tried the clip in the store and it seemed secure. I've almost bought the knife twice, but the whole package is just a little too thick for my taste at the price. I probably will buy it if I find it for a good closeout price, but that hasn't happened yet.

The original maker of the DOG lock, Grant hawk? realized, as Esav said, that his independently designed lock was very close to another lock, that was owned by gerber, who agreed not to bust his nuts over it. I have the Blade issue somewhere..

I remember the cover, it had the knife with orange handle slabs on it.

Got it !!! April 2000.

Ive got 2 d.o.g.'s & they are great knives for the money. the small pocket clip isnt noticable, & it doesnt tend to hang up on things or get scratched like bigger clips. the deadbolt lock is almost overbuilt, just the way i like it. its fun to play with ,too.........
