So i recently purchased a crkt fossil and after 100ish flips the flipper tab started to tear up my skin and after that its started to bleed. Ive thrown some band-aids to see if that could help and it did a bit but the detent is still to strong for me. Is there any way to make it softer?

Thanks,

Your fingers will toughen up or the knife will brake in more, probably both.

I've never done this, but I've heard that if you set your knife out for a few days half open it might help break it in. Try this for a night or two while you let your finger heal up.

I've read that the Fossil can have some sharp edges, especially at the flipper tab. If you're a handy kinda guy, you could always sand it down a bit.

You may just have to keep playing with it and let your hands get used to the knife. I've done this on several occasions. It's not the knife's fault it has a strong detent. Good flippers usually do. I handled a Fossil at a local shop and couldn't stop playing with it. It did have a really strong detent, just so you know.

Really using it is the only way to break in the detent. There is a way to speed it up but you risk ripping the ball out. The way you do it though is with the knife closed you put pressure inward on the lockbar and open the blade with your other hand facilitating more wear on it than you normally would. This works but again if your detent is super strong you might just rip the ball right out of the lockbar. The ball I dont believe is ceramic on those so it could be filed down and sanded or even pushed in more if the ball has a deep enough relief hole drilled for it. Reducing lockbar pressure is not advised as it will cause lock up issues. Honestly though I dont blame the strong detent so much as I blame the rough machine work on the flipper tabs of those knives. I would get an emery board and knock off the sharp points and make it smoother and if not screw with the detent unless absolutely necessary. If its the coated version theres not much you can do without damaging the finish.

I had the same problem. I used a Dremel with a pointer file and carefully dressed up the detent hole on the blade. He careful not to reem out too much.Just bevel the hole a small bit. Did the job.

I have a Fossil, and ALL the angles/edges/grooves on the blade were sharp, not just the primary edge. It was a serious finger/pocket shredder. Fifteen or twenty minutes with some emery paper rounding all those corners and cut-outs was time well spent. Didn't mess with the detent or pivot at all. It's now a really nice, smooth carry piece.
