CRKT Edgie/Edgie 2?

I've been looking for a decent, cheap work/utility folder for awhile now. I need something that would be decently able to handle cardboard, tape, and the evil new plastic coin rolls. Nothing seems to dull one of my knives faster than a plastic coin roll.

I've been looking at the CRKT Edgie and Edgie 2 for awhile, but can't quite bring myself to pull the trigger, especially after the mixed reviews I've seen for the original. Is the Edgie 2 any better? Would you recommend either, or am I seriously better off going the less "cool" way of buying an actual box knife or utility knife?

I had an Edgie 1 back when they first came out. Steel was soft as butter. The clickie sharpen thing wasn't too impressive, more gimmick then useful imo. I unloaded it on the 'bay.

I don't know what your budget is but I would get something else. A Spyderco Byrd series or Kabar Dozier could be had for $20 or less. If you wanna stay with CRKT, maybe a Drifter. I'd spend another few bucks on a double sided sharpening stone to keep an edge up and spend some time sharpening it when it needs it.

Honestly, you might be better off with a utility knife and a large pack of replacement blades. I guess it all depends on if you want to spend some time each week sharpening a knife.

It was that review in particular that kept me from buying the Edgie for so long. Kept me from doing it this time, too.

I gave up and got a Irwin folding utility knife and a pack of replacement blades. I wouldn't have a problem sharpening a knife once a week or so if I used it at work, maybe even every couple days, but I was having to resharpen my CRKT H.U.G. every night. I'm pretty sure any other small folder in that particular price range ($20-$40) would've had the same issue.
