I just picked one up at Big 5 for $17 and some change. The salesman said it was on clearance so I figured why not?, it looked nice with the wrapped handle. I tried the search function but I guess it's not working. Does anyone
know if they are any good? Does anyone have one?

Thanks

It's a good knife, yes. The handle might be a little too small for those with large mitts, but it's a nice, Eastern-styled fixed blade. One minor thing to look out for -- the handle wrap on some samples may be kicked up a little onto the edge of the blade and can actually wind up cut, if that happens. Scope out yours to make sure this is not the case.

Phil, thanks for the info. I just bought it spur of the moment, hell
it looked cool, and cheap. I'm glad it's a decent knife. My wrap is on the edge
of the blade. Oh well, I dont plan on using it as a utility knife. I do enjoy your
website, keep it up...:)

I like mine, even used it for gutting trout when I could not find the CS Pendleton I normally use. Worked fine, mind you I did pay £15 for it, so not such a bargain as yours!!!

If you got the big one it was a super deal. I paid $35 for mine and was pretty happy at that price. I think I could pry a car door open with mine.

It's a good knife. I paid a lot more than that for mine. I would suggest you grind the point off the end of the handle. I got tires of mine sticking me when I drew it, and it was a little sharp when carrying it as a neck knife.

What steel is used on these? I saw em at the local sporting goods store today, looked pretty cool.

I think it's one of those situations where CRKT changed the blade steel as they were going along, without any announcement or anything.

Like they did with the Crawford Kasper, going from AUS 6M to 420J2 at some point and being very low key about it. And the M16 in some versions, going from AUS 8 to AUS 4.

In fact, 1sks.com says, in part, about the First Strike:

"The blades are AUS 6M stainless steel in a satin finish. The blade shape is a combination of the ancient chokuto straight sword and the classic mohora-zukuri double edge tanto. The grind is what Steve calls a convex zero edge, or appleseed cross section, resulting in an edge that is much stronger than taper or hollow grinds. The massive blade thickness continues through the tapered full tang, resulting in incredible strength from tip to butt."

Not to happy about it being AUS-6 but I'm not going to use it for
anything except a backup so I guess I can live with the cheap steel(but is was $17!) I looked at the black blade version with the olive colored wrap
and it is incredible! The only problem is they were asking $79 for it(full retail).
I would buy it too if it were under $50. Im going to live with my $17 CRKT,
and be happy with it(although that 3 in. version is sweet and very carryable!) :D
