Hello. I'm intending on purchasing one of the abovementioned knives (CRKT Fossil/CRKT M16-ZSF), but I was curious as to which knife would be the better recommendation. Are there any common problems with either knife or downsides that I should be aware of? Any personal experiences are also highly appreciated. Thanks for the help. -Zay

I am not a fan of CRKT at all. They make a few decent blades, but overall there are many better options out there. You can get more for your money with other brands like Cold Steel (Recon 1 series, Code 4 series), Kershaw (Zing, Leek, Blur, Skyline), Spyderco (Delica, Endura, Sage, Paramilitary), ESEE (Zancudo) and Ontario (Rat Model 1/Model 2, Utilitac II).

I own the Fossil and like it quite a lot. It is a collaboration piece with Flavio Ikoma and reproduces his custom quite faithfully (with less expensive materials). Outstanding flipper using the IKBS bearing system. My only complaint is that it is a bit heavy for its size, but a nice knife nonetheless.

I now own quite a few of the more recent CRKT offerings. They have come a very long way in recent years and many of their knives are good value knives. None of mine are cheaply made nor are they junk. They compare quite favorably with my similarly priced knives from other manufacturers. For example, I collect Kershaw Skylines (I have 14) and, aside from the Forum Skyline with S30V steel, I find the Fossil to be a better knife than that line of manual flippers - and I like the Skyline. JMO, of course.

Of the two that you ask about, I do not own the M16. I have handled the knife and find that the Fossil feels better in hand and is a knife that I prefer over the M16, which is why I don't own one. I do like the the Fossil quite a bit.

Good luck on your decision. :)

Thanks Saintly, it certainly has character and uniqueness about it. I think I'll give it a shot, mate.

Get that CRKT.
I waited too long to get one and a CRKT M16 is in my rotation.

Just can agree to SaintlyBrees dont own them but handled both of them an IMO the feeling of the Fossil is better and of course the action caused by the ikbs is really nice but overall i kind of like the m16's design more ! In the end i think you'll be happy with each one!

I've had the fossil on my wish list since it came out. I usually don't do serrated knives, but in the past I've found the veff serrations to be fantastic, and they really give that knife blade an awesome look. Let us know what you get and post pics!

M16 all the way. I put my CRKT to work everyday. I cut a lot of tape and cardboard and rope.

Hope this helps.

I'd get the 16 , but not the SF version. The top guard is unneeded, IMO
That series has been very reliable for many people. I have a 16-01z spear point that is well worth the 35 dollars I paind for it. I like the auto lawks

I will give CRKT that, the Veff serrations are probably the best I've ever seen. I used to have a mini serrated My Tighe a long time ago. I also owned an M16, which IMO is close to being a great knife but just doesn't cut it because of the poor blade steel and tip-down only carry. I might consider getting a Ripple but that too is tip down only, and I've found I just hate tip down carry.
