I have been considering buying a lone wolf harsey ranger. The knife is going to cost me around 140.00. I have also been looking at the gerber air ranger and the CRKT m16. Why is there such a cost difference in the lone wolf knife - the gerber is around 45.00? Is the steel or construction that much better? Are the Gerbers and CRKT that are made in taiwan any good? Is the lone wolf steel that much stronger or does it hold a better edge than the other two mentioned knifes? I see other "tactical" knives that are 200.00+ at shows? What is the extra cost for? To the "untrained" eye they all appear to be well made.

Thanks Robert

The major difference in cost is that the Lone Wolf is made in the U.S.A. Additionally it has better steel and better fit and finish. In other words it is in a different league from the others. The other knives are made in Taiwan and, hence, much cheaper. I don't think this is much of a comparison, however. The Lone Wolf is really a very nice knife. You may want to visit a knife store if there is one available to you to check it out.

I agree I have the T2 and it is a nice knife, they had some problems with them but mine is very nice.

Welcome to Bladeforums! :)

Looks are one thing, materials and manufacturing quality are another, but you should also think about what you are really going to use the knife for. Sometimes, a cheaper knife will do everything you ask of it, if it's only opening an occasional envelope or peeling fruit.

Gerber isn't what it used to be and CRKT has some bargain basement models, but both are fine for ordinary use. On the other hand, if you really want a "tactical" (hard use) knife, the Lone Wolf is a great choice.

I use my knives primarily for skinning or at least that is where they get used for the longest period of time. Other than that it is misc ranch related work. I really want something that will hold an edge. I have an old timer that I keep going back to simply because it is fast to resharpen and seems to hold the edge better than anything else I tried. - thanks

The ranger is a great knife, its made in the USA with good materials and its the sharpest knife ive ever got right out of the box.Mine also holds its edge very well.

As far as I know the lone wolf knives (some of them at least) are made in Italy.

I've got a Lonewolf T-2 Tactical Ranger with cocobolo grips that's the nicest knife I've ever owned, period. (Believe me, I've cycled through my fair share too):o

That being said, It seems I'm one of the lucky ones. Do a search here and you'll find alot of reports regarding questionable quality control from them. Too many to discount, in my opinion.
