Rec. this on Fri from New Graham. As always service was excellant from NG. On to a short rev. of this knife. Well don't know exactly why I wanted one but I did and now I have it.

Initial impression of the knife after I could get it opened was mixed due to the very uneven back edge grind. The coating was pretty wavy suggesting that the edge grind was uneven and well it was. Almost looks like someone attempted to sharpen the knife to fix it. Not really sharp out of the box. Wouldn't scrape off hair either on the back or front edges. The first thing I had to do is back off the pivot screw as it was cranked down mucho tighto. Loosened it up and snugged it back down and at least could make the blade deploy. Still pretty darn snug though. So much so that my thumb will slide off the disk more than half time when trying to deploy the blade.

I emailed NG about the uneven back blade grind and didn't hear from them so broke out the Lansky and tried to straighten it out this a.m.. Did fix it a bit but not that well. Seems like the plunge for the initial grinding of the blade wasn't done deep enough hence when you try and sharpen the edge back there it just kind of hogs it out a bit. Didn't go crazy on it so it isn't that bad but I'll tell ya for the money paid I would expect better.

As for the deployment issue I took one side of the knife apart down to the liner. It seems the liner is press fit onto the standoffs and there is no way I could see short of trying to pry them apart, which I didn't do, to get them apart. Bottom line impression of this knife is this: When it fires it fires harder than many auto's I have owned so be forewarned as this would be pretty hard to convince a copper I would think that it isn't an auto. Also the blade grinds need to be much better at least on my knife. Don't have the liners pressed on so tight as that you can get them off to at least lubricate the pivot. Well there you have it. I figure I am out 60 bucks and that isn't so bad I guess. Would be much better to be able to check one out in person to make sure the one you were buying is up to snuff. As it stands this one gets a thumbs down from me :thumbdn:

Now don't get me wrong the knife has potential but don't really see it as an edc knife either. More purpose driven in the s.d. roll me thinks. keepem sharp

thanks for the review,,was thinking of picking one up but now not so sure

longbow, I'd recommend you ship the knife back to CRKT for a repair/exchange. Address is available at www.crkt.com

I received a Hissatsu folder that's very impressive: authoritative blade deployment, great lockup and very sharp.

Seems that first production runs tend to have a few more "duds", it just seems that way to me

Thanks for the review. You should send it back. They have been good to me when I have had a problem.

Got mine from AG Russell and it has the identical problems that Longbow has described.

This was my first CRKT in years. A test to see if there have been improvements since I gave up on them.

They flunked.

Thanks for the advice. Don't know really what CRKT could do though. I already tried to straighten out the grind so I don't know. The blade deployment though totally sucks. That thing is more difficult to deploy than just about any knife I have ever owned, one handed or two hand opening knives. I've been hitting with WD40 on and off throughout the day and it seems that it may be loosening a tad but still is pretty difficult and hard on my thumb.

The other thing I have found quite by accident is that when you are closing the blade make sure it is closed all the way. For some reason this is sticking a bit just before closing and I rammed the tip into the plam of my left hand. Thought it had closed all the way. Painful to say the least. keepem sharp

One thing about CRKT, through all their weird steel changes and all, is that the knives out of the box have almost always had a really great fit and finish.
And have had an excellent initial edge, too.

I'd give CRKT the benefit of the doubt and at least contact them. They even answer the phone; number listed at the website.

And as I mentioned, the Hissatsu folder I bought is great. Did not buy it from A.G. or NGK, BTW.

I received my #2903 Hissatsu a little over a week ago and said pretty much the same thing about the deployment. My right thumb is busted up real good using the Hissatsu all week. I have a machinist at work who is willing to mill me a thumb disc that will have a bit more purchase on each side without getting in the way. As for the blade. I was fortunate and mine looked real nice and has cut through most everything I have put in its Path. I also shelled out near $60.00 but I kinda like the knife. I wish it had a flipper and I wish it Didn't have Autolawks. I think a flipper of some sort would be the Bomb. ~baba~

I've found that CRKT quality can vary. For example, out of 3 knives of one pattern, only one was worth taking home. Another patter I liked, I couldn't find one that didn't have a difficulty and I looked at about 4 in the space of 2 years. That's why I don't buy them on the web. Don't buy CRKT unless you can pick the one you want. Once you get a good one, they hold up real well over time.

Longow, sorry about the problem with the CRKT. I am currently out of the country (although not too far,,,,Mexico)...not sure why someone did not get back to you but expect the weekend came into play. If there is something we can do to help with the knife let us know. I will not be back until next week, but will do all I can to make it right.
Regards, Mike (in Mexico)

Dang i have one on the way from A.G. Russel that i ordered a long time ago and i was excited about getting it now I'm kind of worried about getting a bad one. I not a big fan of CRKT but i really liked the looks of this knife.

No worries Michael. Mary Beth contacted me. Great service like I said. I'll take care of this on my own. Already tried straightening out the back edge and so it is now sharpened. Not the best I'll admit but that is due to the uneven grind. Pretty darn sharp though. thanks again and keepem sharp

Mine came in last week from NG as well. I can't say that it is perfect fit and finish (it is no sebenza) but it isn't priced like one either. Mine decent and reasonably even edge and the opening was good. Speaking of sebenza, Is it just me, or the handle shape on Hissatsu and Sebenza are very similar?

I have to add that i have no bias for or against CRKT, but Hissatsu and Triumph are my first CRKT's in years. I liked the Hissatsu and a little disappointed with the Triumph. When you open the Triumph using the AO, the entire knife weirdly wibrates - very annoying.
