Courtesy of CRKT is this interesting folder from the co-inventor of the IKBS - Ikoma Korth (pivot) Ball-bearing System.

This is the small version (model 5460) which isn't all that small -

Compared to similar sized knives -

top: CRKT Ken Onion Ripple (K405BXP - original version, link to review)
mid: CRKT Ikoma Fossil Small 5460
bottom: CRKT Ikoma Sampa (5330, link to review)

Closed -

Being IKBS - it is a flipper - the action seems a bit slow'ish - that's no bad thing though -
- instead of snapping out, the blade seems to glide out - it is really smooth.

It bears very similar family resemblance to the CRKT Ikoma Sampa (5330)

IKBS helps a great deal in keeping the blade well centered in the handle -

Notice the pocket clip on the Fossil - seems a bit over-engineered

Everything is nicely aligned -

The Fossil uses a traditional stop-pin - the Sampa has a semi-hidden one.

The Sampa is a liner lock with machined aluminum handles -
the Fossil is a frame-lock with hammered stainless steel with sculpted duo color G10 inset handles.

lock-up is good and it is very easy and smooth to unlock - and feel of closing the blade is slinky smooth - due, no doubt, to IKBS.

Details of hammered finish and G10 inset -

The hammered finish does not extend under the G10 inset -

Some hammered finished knives -

top: Mcusta 114D tsuchi large
mid: CRKT Ikoma Fossil Small 5460
bottom: Mcusta 113D - "Tsuchi" (small - link to review)

Weights:
Fossil - 4.19oz
Sampa - 2.66oz
All Steel Ripple - 2.96oz
Mcusta 114D - 3.88oz

The man himself talking about the knife:

Oh man, this one is going on my list. Looks like a knife a T-rex would carry with his tiny little arms.

Vince, I finally checked these out at CRKT's site. They show them as having caged bearings. Can you confirm (can't quite tell from your pics). They also describe the Tighe Rod as having caged bearings, but it doesn't (at least not the one I got, which has regular loose IKBS bearings).

The CRKT Ikoma Fossil small 5460 page shows this:

(Please note: this is not my image - but CRKT - re-saved and re-hosted)

So I opened my Fossil -

Closer

Yes, that is a brass retaining cage for the IKBS ball bearings.

facing side when knife opened and the opposite side which is facing the blade -
the IKBS is swimming in light grease - I did not try to see if I could pry out a ball bearing -
but none fell out even when I took the opposite side pic which would have the open side facing down.

Not that it was difficult to open/disassemble -
but could save having to do any of that
simply by looking pivot end-on to the closed knife with good light -
can easily see the glint of the brass cages between the blade and scales -

Does any one who has this knife feel that it is to small? I am going to get one, but i'm not sure to get the 5470 or 5460. If anyone has an opinion on the size difference that would be greatly appreciated.

I have the small and think it's just the right size. The large seemed bigger than I would carry although I did like it when I saw one. I like a blade at about 3.5" as that size is best for me. Had I not seen the large first I would have ordered large and then never carried it due to size. The small has a very comfortable grip for me and I have large hands and am 6' 1" tall.

Super smooth flipper too, but mine has mostly been flipped and not cut much so I can't give much in the way of a review.

The "small" is more of a medium sized folder. Kinda like the Benchmade Mini Skirmish.

A solid folder, the first CRKT I've ever had and was surprisingly impressed with it. Smooth action, sharp blade, nice lines and felt good in the hand. Only thing I wasn't too fond of was the clip. Stuck out a little bit too much. I passed it along as I hardly ever carried it, but would be quite alright if I had to only carry that one.
