Can you close the CRKT lake bandera with one hand since the release is at the back of the handle?

Would the lake bandera 2 or 1 be better as a EDC?

Thanks guys!

yes, you can close lockbacks with one hand. you might need the back of your thigh to help, but it can be done.

if you're only considering that one model series, then i would personally prefer the bandera over the bandera 2 as far as size goes. i even have medium hands.

Thanks for your response!

So with just the hand, it may be harder to close it one handed..you really need a knee?

The reason why I am considering this series is because I can get the bandera for about $25 bucks shipped which seems like a great deal? I am new to knives and just want to have a good EDC knife and dont want to spend more than $25. The assisted ones look real cool but more expensive.

There is also the gerber EVO and EVO JR in a package on sale for only 21 bucks. WOuld that be better? I have a leatherman and multi swiss army knife by the way.

I really don't recommend the Lake Bandera as a good deal, even for $25 (and I do own one). It really isn't a very nice knife, nor would it be a good introduction to the hobby. Get a Spyderco Tenacious or Kershaw Skyline instead.

Ok sounds good.

Would you rather get the kershaw skyline or the kershaw Ener-G? They look almost the same and weigh pretty much the same. I think the tenacious would be too heavy.

I haven't personally handled an Ener-G, but I have a Skyline and it's a lot of knife for the money. If you would consider spending a bit more, the Spyderco Cat is an interesting new option, with much better steel and carbon fiber scales.

Ok I will take a look at the spyderco cat. The cat seems like the blade is kinda small for an edc/tactical just in case. Plus it is heavier than the skyline with a smaller blade...

The tenacious looks nice but am just worried about how people can cut themselves since the blade can come out pretty easily I heard.

i think the idea of self-defense with a knife should be pushed WAY to the back of your mind. i can't believe i'm the first one here to say that.

with that in mind, what are the other things you plan to use your knife for?

i mean, i carry a crawford/kasper folder, which is based on designs by knife fighting experts, but i use it as a cutting tool infinitely more than as a self-defense weapon. in fact, i could envision myself cutting a seatbelt before i could envision myself trying to draw and deploy a knife while under attack.

don't get me wrong, i'm okay in my mind with using the knife to take someone's life if the situation ever presented itself, but i realize the extreme unlikelihood of the right conditions ever occuring.

why is one-handed closing important to you? what about the bandera is attractive to you and why? have you picked up and manipulated any other knives? what do you like about them and what didn't you like about them and why? have you any experience with sharpening knives?

Yah it should be wayyy back in my mind you are right.

Well one hand closing isnt really important to me. I just want a good edc knife for maybe opening packages, cutting food, opening envelopes, going on hikes, nothing really like cutting wood or really heavy duty...yet

I do not know how to sharpen knives...I was watching some youtube videos of it. I dont know where to get the cheapest sharpening stone.

I only have held a leather man, and a swiss army knife. My uncle had a knife but dont remember what kind. I think it was a big benchmade.

My pockets are usually full with stuff so I want something light but dont want a puny blade I guess.

THere are so many choices out there, and am looking at :

Kershaw Skyline
Kershaw Blur
Kershaw Shallot
Kershaw Leek
Kershaw scallion
Kershaw chive

CRKT drifter

SOG Flash 1/2

Spyderco Tenacious/ persistence
Sypderco byrd raven
Spyderco native

I know that there are some knives here that is like 50 bucks. I wonder if I should spend that much on my first knife like a delica? Or just go for a skyline? What would be a good first edc knife?

If you want to start out with a bit of a bang go grab a Buck vantage pro. You get awesome machined g10 and an s30v blade for around $50.

Hmm ill look into that. But for 50 i could get a delica or native. Is the Buck vantage pro much better than the buck vantage? Worth the 20 bucks or so more?

Is the Kershaw 1660OLBLK a real leek? I dont see it on their website, but on like ebay it is around 30 bucks. Is that a cheap price?

Whats the best of those that I listed for my purposes?

The Ontario rat 1 looks nice, but too heavy?

of thoes you mentioned, i'd go with skyline, drifter, or leek, in that order, unless something particular about each draws you more to one or the other.

why? skyline has been a forum favorite for "bang for the buck" knives. it has a solid size and no funky recurves that could make sharpening difficult. heck, for $50, buy two. daily carry and use one and then practice sharpening it without fear of ruining it, since you always have another. use the other for dressy occasions where you don't plan to use it at all, since it'll keep its pocket clip from getting all scratched up. like your EDC one will. i also find that scaled knives (rather than framelocks like the shallot and leek) are wider handled and therefore more comfortable to use.

Same thing with the drifter, buy two if you like.

the leek's drawback for a first knife is the AO, where if you're not comfortable handling yourself and your knife around people, it might become an issue. it does carry nice and thin and light and has a classy, less intimidating shape than, say the skyline.

one thing to remember is that the average cell phone weighs about 4.5 oz, which is more than a lot of people like to have in their knives, but it's about what i prefer. i don't want some featherweight handle. plus, when it's clipped to your pocket, it isn't really as noticable a weight as a cell phone hanging in the bottom your pocket.

now, i didn't pick any spydercos because of personal preference. i prefer my CRKT and my kershaws over the basic design of spydies.

however, like most kershaws, you pretty much can't go wrong with any spyderco if you like that style, where CRKT is hit and miss.

I have a Tenacious, have never had a problem with the blade coming open un-intentionally. I carry it tip up in my RH front pocket. This places the spine of the knife against the back of the pocket. No problems whatsoever with it coming open when I didn't want it to.
