I've suddenly become a big Columbia River fan with the purchase of my Crawford/Kasper Folder. For a tiny thing what's a better knife - the Lightfoot Urban Shark or the Navajo?

The Point Guard!

But between your two choices, I think the biggest difference is Zytel vs. steel handles. I'd go with the Lightfoot because it has a shark on it. Can't beat that.

I agree with Avenger.
I have the Navajo and it is a very nice little worker for me. The steel slabs give it a good deal of heft for a knife it's size. I was unable to dis-lodge the liner lock with a spine whack even though it seems a bit thin. It looks and feels and works like a very well made folder. I especially like the little finger well that aids in keeping the fingers off the blade.
If CRKT had a sleeper, this would be it. I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this knife on the board.

To give you a heads-up on what's next, a new super lightweight version of the Navajo is now in the works and was shown for the first time at the recent Blade Show.

It's called the "Contrail". It has the same overall profile of the Navajo but incorporates the blue/black layered G-10 exclusive to CRKT. The outer surface is textured black but the three accent grooves, the logo and the border all reveal the rich blue subsurface for a striking contrast. Made in Italy like the Navajo, the clip has been thinned down with the company logo pierced as a cut-out near the tip. The thumbstud has been changed to make it smoother on insertion and extraction in the pocket. It maintains the same recessed internal spring as the stainless steel version.

In addition, the real kicker is its weight--the large size weighs only 1.8 ounces and the smaller size checks in at 1.1 ounces. The same thumb ramp grooves and finger grip notches on the bottom are there for a very secure grip. The blade has a soft right brushed satin finish. The steel is the European Z60DCV14.

It was amazing to me how strikingly different the new version of the Contrail was to the Navajo. I was extremely pleased with the new version as were all the folks placing orders for them as well. Suggested retail prices on the two sizes will be $69.99 and $74.99. Be sure and give it a look when it comes out.

Best regards,
Jim

My Point Guard will be here as soon as the "Brown Truck of Joy" arrives. Count me in for a Contrail. Any idea when available? And, of course, nice work Jim.

The prototypes of these as well as the other models introduced mid-year are just arriving so having them in the pipeline with dealers being supplied will be several months out from this point.

Thanks much,
Jim

I've never handled a Navajo. I have a large LUS, and I had a small Point Guard. (I sort of collect CRKTs)

I personally like the LUS far better than the PG. I gave away my small PG. At the time, it was easy to make that choice. The PG was the first CRKT knife I didn't really like.

The LUS has a smooth action. Mine came very sharp, good lockup. It is gray, not black, which has to be worth something. It is intended as both a utility knife and, if need be, to be serviceable in self defense. It is one of my favorites.

Today, when I checked, the Apache 3 at Smoky Mountain was out of stock. It had the combo edge. But, the Apache 2 was available @$25. It has much better grade steel and handle material than the 2 you asked about. It has ATS34 blade, and anodized aluminum handles. It is a little light for heavy work. IMHO, the Apache is second only to the KFF for self-defense purposes of the CRKT knives. All 4 Apaches I own came sharp as the dickens.
