I finally have an old friend of mine interested in having a good knife. He has had knives in the past, but nothing too exciting. He is narrowed it down between the zytel m16 and the point guard. Any info you can provide to help us decide?

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

Small PG is just that - small. Good knife, but rather small, and the finger choil pushes your hand back on the handle.

I would suggest one of the 'MIL' or 'SRT' m16's. The teflon coating helps inhibit minor rust spots which can occur on the m16's with the bead-blast finish. The point guard is also nice...it can be used as a kubaton and it has a double lock...either way he can't lose.

Thanks guys. BTW, we will not be able to hsandle the knives before we get them. If anyone has an M16 for sale, I would like an email? Point guard too. Comboedge.

I just got a M16-14M and I can tell you it is one of the finest production knives made in terms of fit and finish. Since the Point guard is also made by CRKT, it should be the equal except the finsh on the M16-14M is a winner along with the 1*. Dick

I have a small Point Guard, and a medium sized carbon fibre M16. If I were to pick one as an everyday carry-around small knife, it would definitely be the Point Guard. The Point Guard opens much smoother, and seems to come with a sharper edge. The Point Guard also feels and looks more impressive with the full set of liners, compared with the minimal liner content of the M16. The Point Guard also rides a little easier in the pocket, and has a less "tactical" look.

Don't get me wrong. The M16 is a great knife. I'd just prefer the Point Guard for casual use. It has a nice set of features, and really spiffy finish. I'll save my M16 for outdoor use.

Now if I were looking at the slightly larger sized Point Guard and M16....... I'd buy a CRKT Crawford/Kasper folder. It kicks both their butts in the casual tactical market.

I have the large CRKT PG and it's a real winner for the price.

It's a very close copy of the "real thing". I spent some time at the recent ECCK Show handling Pat Crawford's PG and the comparison between the two is amazing. Pat was also selling the CRKT knife at his own table. I don't think he would do that if he felt the CRKT copy did not do him justice.

I have an M16-03Z with spear point that is really great. Make sure you get one with a Carson Flipper. This is one of my favourite carries and it's really fast to get into play. The zytel handle version is a great bargain. If you have some influence over your mate, try to persuade to get an M16 with aluminium handle, AUS-8 blade and Carson flipper - now that is a great knife!

I have a large Crawford /Kasper Fighting Folder as well. It's a bit heavy, but the smaller one is something really worth considering as well. Grip shape is really good. The large PG looks like a decent buy as well.
