So I'm looking for a decent and fairly inexpensive EDC folder and atm I've got my sights set on either one of the CRKT M-16 models or a RAT 1 from Ontario. Does anyone have both? If so how do feel about one over the other? Atm I'm leaning towards the RAT since it's a tad larger and the handle seems a tad more ergonomic. I'm not as familiar with folders as I am fixed bladed knives so I'm also open to other considerations too.

+1 for Rat 1 as well, I dig mine, no experience with the other CRKT. I do have a CRKT money clip thing some one gave me though...it works for what it is....only product I've used.

The M16 has so many variants out there, and I only have the M16-01KZ from the EDC line, but I'd definitely recommend the RAT. It would be a good knife at twice the price and, for around $30, it's the best 'bang-for-buck' knife around, imo.

I'd also say that you ought to look at the Buck Vantage series...

Good luck! :)

Get both, try them, sell the one you don't like?

Both are similar in size, overall, so it comes down to details.

The M-16 blade is ground differently from the RAT; probably a little more durable, but some compromise in slicing ability.
RAT handle does look more hand friendly, but I've never had any hot spots with my little M16, and I've put it through some things that were a little too big for it.

The M16 pocket clip is on the small side. Not a problem for EDC, but something to be aware of if your activities create "gear retention" issues.

I would go with a RAT1. I've owned most of the M16/M18/M21 models, and while I like the old ones without the LAWKS but with the AUS8, I would say that the RAT1 is a far more superior folder. More comfortable, same AUS8 steel. The aluminum scales on the M16 and M21 models are grippy, but the overall RAT1 is very comfortable. More than enough knife, but when you are a knife addict, just one in a million. I might pick up a few as Christmas gifts next weekend at the Chesapeake show.
