Anyone noticed that when opened rather aggressively, with some serious kick to the wrist, that the lock becomes crazy ahrd to close, two hands just to disengage the lock? Normally opening it there is no problem, but with speed there is a large problem, I can't possibly imagine a need for such fast opening but I think their should be some type of guard that stops it from overshooting and becoming nearly locked closed.

I mean that the lock spring goes way to far to the righ thwen looking at it tip out and blade up.

That's a problem with a lot of liner locks. It's also a problem when chopping with them. I've had a couple, not CRKTs, that I needed a twig to force the liner to release. The thicker, stiffer locking bar of a framelock is generally less susceptible to this.

I had the exact problem with my M16. Took it apart and polished up the mating surfaces and the bind is completely gone now. I'm afraid your problem will not self cure and any lube will be a temp fix.

I believe, at least where the CRKT liner-locks are concerned, they apply a sort of coating, or very roughly texturize/blast the part of the tang that the liner-lock mates with. I remember Kit Carson posting here, years ago, that they (CRKT) put something on there to make the surface more "non-slip". That may be the reason for the extra-tight lockup.

Hmmm with the lawks system I see little need for high grit, thanks for all the info, if they just made a little protrusion that stopped it from moving beyond a certain point it would work without jamming.

My experience with friend's CRKTs and new CRKTs is the liners seem fairly soft. I have other liner locks that I snap open often (either flip or assisted) and the liners take MUCH longer to slip to past half the tang than on CRKTs (I have CRKT liner locks too). They do stick when snapped open hard, but they take a very long time to travel to the other side of the tang. The CRKTs I've experience however will have the liner move past half-tang in a matter of a dozen or so hard snaps. While I really really like many of CRKT's designs, I've tried to stay away from most of their knives due to their liner locks. I've had better experience in terms of wear on liner locks with other brands. I do like their other frame locks tho like the My Tighe.

BTW, 65535 - are you on CPF?

Yes, new M4 has LAWKs. I really like the design, but am cautious of the liner lock. I'm hoping to be able to take a look at one in person before I form any good or bad opinions on it.

Does anyone else wish someone would make a better M16? I think this is a fantastic design (the spear point). Just wish it had better blade & parts.

I do, I love the simplisity of the knife, it just works, nothing go get clogged, it handles crap well, I think that the BM 710 would be good, some people were talking about it as a M16 replacement,

and I do frequent cpf.

maybe the term i come to identify this problem with is not the right term.

but isnt this problem known as "lock-binding" ?

some lead from a #2 pencil will lube up the lock and it probably will break in after some use,

if ya like the M16 try a CRKT Ti M16ifyacan find one, i dont know if they still make them or not, i have had a couple, a spear point and a large tanto, LOTS better F&F than a std CRKT, MSRP was IIRC about $90 for the largest one. imho its the highest quality CRKT around,

or ya could get a custom from carson i suppose.

pat crawford makes some good stuff but not M16's ya re thinking of the kasper folder i bet.

It loosens up with time...

I happen to own like a 4th (5th is newest?) M16-13T which has the new style body with 2 post rather than a plastic or aluminum wedgie piece, and a manual Lawks. Last one in the area.

Sorry, I slipped and meant to type CUSTOM.. (I was contemplating saving up for a KFF and typed Crawford out)

Just got a M16-14SF from ebay, stunned how much better the blade is in AUS8 rather than AUS6 whish I assume the zytel M16 I have is made of. The edge is truely shaving shape with little effort.

No worries, GB.;) I thought you might have been thinking of the CRKT versions of the KFF, instead of the CRKT M series.
