I have had a CRKT M16-01 with a carbon fiber handle for years. Now I can not rember what steel the blade was made with. Seems to me when the knife was new, the steel was considered a cut above their regular line. I have been searching and can not find any thing that identifies the steel. Any one ideas please.

I might be wrong but I think it was aus8. If you're really curious call crkt and ask them, I did and they were very helpful. later, ahgar

Hi, according to the 2000 crkt catalog i have, it was called acuto440,a new premium cutlery stainless steel, with about 0.90 carbon,17.00-18.00 chromium,rc of 59-60,1,30-1.50 molybdenum0.50 manganese; hope this helps you.how did they go from this to 420j2??:barf:

I'd so buy an M16 is they make a plain edge one in that or even AUS8 again. My CRKT WASP is the same steel, IIRC

I have several carbon fiber M16's. Mine are AUS-118. GarageBoy, check out the CRKT M16-01T. It is a compact model with titanium handles and a plain edge, AUS8 blade.

Regular (beadblasted) were made of AUS118 (former name acuto440) but black "1 of 500" I believe made of AUS8.

i have had the larger M16 CF and the smallest, still have the small one, IIRC they both were AUS 118, ok knives the larger one had a lot of "flex" in the handle and i wonder how strong the lock up is when the handle has so much flex, never had problems with it but always wondered, another con is they were pretty high priced, as high as any CRKT around (~$150), i dont know of another CF handle like that were there is no liner.

I have 2 CF knives except M16 - Spyderco Military and Klotzli Wimpff. Both are more expensive and have only one liner like M16. For my hands it isn't "flex" at all.

I have the M16-01F, the older version without the flipper. Its small and the nonlocking scales flexes, causing the locking liners to lockup so tightly that I needed a scredriver to pry it open. Its a cute little letter opener thats suitable for light duty. Just dont try to power cut with it.

On the other hand, the M16-14t is so huge that its more like a tank!!!! I find that the best is the M16-13t or better still if u can find it M16-03t. Just the right size, slim with minimal width that u wont find it snagging ur hand when looking for change in ur pocket.

Thanks for the pics. I was curious to know if there were holes or not. That is one thing with CRKT, they have a tendency to remove the nice models from their line up. You guys may have seen my CRKT that I had modded. I bought it for only $50.
Here is a pic.

dont have a clue about the klotzi but i dont think millies have CF handles they are G10, my M16 CF did not have liners, the small one definitly does not, IIRC the large one didnt either but thats been a while so i might be wrong.

limited edition C36CFP Military has CF scales. I don't sure about regular M16-14F, but black M16-14FK has a liner on the one side and also LAWKS safety. Small M16 - no liners.

My carbon fibre M-16 was one of the smaller models. The handle had a ton of flex, to the point where even small to medium loads would effect the lockup.

I own a M-16 14 Carbon fiber, that I picked up from a CRKT Rep and it's definately AUS118. It's the only knife I know of w/ that particular steel
